BassCliff's G-Sight Laser Practice Range

Hi,

Oh, I think it's definitely me. :p I have found that if I practice laser dry fire enough, correctly and thoroughly, it can be beneficial if, and that's a big IF, I bring the exact same sight picture and trigger pull to the range. Of course, I need to leave out the flinch from anticipated recoil. One of these days I'll get totally over that hurdle. :D

I'll try to put my theory into practice today. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
I didn’t say it wasn’t beneficial. I said it wasn’t all that beneficial. At least past the point where you are practicing fundamentals. If the laser doesn’t hit the same as a live round then what you’re doing with the laser isn’t going to be what you’re doing with an actual gun with live ammo. Marksmanship wise.

Hi!

Well, Mrs. BassCliff is out of town again this weekend so, guess what? That's right. I got in another session of laser practice last night and I plan on going to the range right after I post this to see if any of my dry fire practice sticks. ;)

I kept the session fairly short, less than an hour. I couldn't stay up late because the granddaughters were playing soccer at 8am. I did some pure marksmanship practice, some quick draw practice, and some turn-and-shoot practice (like El Presidente). Marksmanship was from ten yards.

I did pretty well this evening. The first target was all over the place with at least half in the 8 ring. On the second target I settled down.

I can't say that I was consistent, but I could pretty much call the shots that I pulled out. I did have a few good strings when I kept my concentration.

Do you know you have a terrorist in your basement strapped with C4?

Hi Bob,

Hope you got some desiccant packs in those bass cases.

Thanks for the reminder. I know some of the cases have desiccant. I should get more and be sure they all have it. That's a "temporary" storage spot and it's twenty feet from the dehumidifier. My working bases are upstairs in my office but i need to find a permanent home for the rest. Keep it low!

Thank you for your indulgence,

Hey gang!

Last night I did a little laser practice session in my basement range in anticipation of some live fire practice tomorrow. I was concentrating on keeping the muzzle motionless during the trigger pull. I put a nickel on top of my slide just behind the front sight. It really made me think about all the fundamentals. I'm happy to say I did not drop the nickel at all.

1658266082480.png

1658266096064.png

Both of the above from 10 yards, my favorite B-8 target and a two inch circle on one inch grids.

Let's hope this exercise translates to my live fire practice tomorrow. The nickel seems to have helped so I'll definitely use this for future laser practice sessions.

I've also heard about putting an empty cartridge on top of your slide, but then I wouldn't be able to see my front sight. :p

Hey, thanks for putting up with me. I'll let you know how my live fire practice goes.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Hello friends,

I practiced last night for about an hour in my little basement laser range on a dot torture drill.

AL9nZEXQyG3FXFDUyPVq7AlEWNWaT2x5kcsF3r159DNFoFP6cC4Hj53ImzAxD-gRw5XwBJ6ITqv4hs-wOAxMdHOV0iRikI_xfmnmfuzdgQqF6c7yFuO9F6wYo1M6VjLqPMgV-fMobxWvOeIL_0-CDr-zlgdD7A=w1236-h927-no

I must admit, while doing this dot drill if I messed up really bad halfway through I would just start over again. A few times I lost count of the number of hits on each dot and would end up with 46 or 52. Oops. Before I practice this again I will print up a couple of grayscale copies, one for the wall and the other to keep at my "shooting station" so that I don't have to run back and forth to make sure I'm shooting the right sequences. Sometimes it's hard for this old noob to remember. :p This was my best run of the session, still with a couple of hits out of the circles. Drat. Distance = 5 yards. As soon as I get a perfect run I'll start adding some stress, a time limit, etc.

AL9nZEVpAzLSP2GgTMsyb3c2yw9heojcqU8yUcM0vN_J-PwqZxYcQZPTmCdy0xiDf2IawaJtQ3E6zNlJWYYsyBPGMCtt3Q7QBDGzKC8UE1esTAyrNFvrtb7AczM2yOhIwjooV9KhKJI4-aTPB2TAZlx2UtgeJA=w522-h927-no

I think a grayscale target will make the laser hits a little more clear too. You can see the difference between the hits on the white parts and the orange parts. Maybe it's time for a new phone.

Then I took a few minutes to practice quick-draw from 5 yards. I started off not trying to rush.

AL9nZEXkoMaWkixhrD8jOsDJ1m7lPwSUZA4efq0UDaq2hJMYKtnOl7kINNjR9uZwYMuqti846_8H4uQk_3JAB9AdP294kZuby4wTg3IImU8wLq8GzxnlxkRqXlTCB-eZl8UrIm6VrmodBJptkdXIpPAXwHLskA=w522-h927-no

Then I started pushing it.

AL9nZEWIOXUUuVH2FrORNP4aJCys2skXBtx7GAXOGKdTHbakkCFgMfpPk4WVroEUh0mc0KejFJCv0lRtFt9VlbLkMyIPN4g9XUd9eaZiVPDlVIhKKagzG6-crSw2iZLDuPJNxMIBkwy-MAlTGTqC812raA3rRQ=w522-h927-no

Then I fumbled the draw and had trouble defeating my garment. Oops. At least I took a little extra time and had good accuracy on this one.

AL9nZEW-2Meco-dygsBIfg5j8ZxStYD--GmbnB91DflH-sa8wWZ9fTS4cGnUvEbk1HKfJnvy9g4Fl6Z4jpTCHWDbH3z7ahFizAbV8cx3ZnmANgHU0oz_XYWQfCYPEcrHXNAOJvEaxz5f2mQuL82n0gKXejZOIA=w522-h927-no

But then I got way behind the curve on this one and totally lost it.

AL9nZEUMoDznOeveYQpe9jqXuK3AswVhjKsblHG0NE3YvhLAGAjDS-1Shv_9TVc3KuAbgSU5sCjlxEDr9RTgQZsqIp4G_FBCXFU2bPDa4BOO18e0NJEyIHXoWd9Cm-pQ1tCVHhKiqOhQWoSDwCNc4_9slD9aqg=w522-h927-no

So I took a breath, slowly practiced my draw stroke a couple of times, and then turned the timer back on.

Next week my range is offering a USCCA approved live fire clinic on drawing for defensive accuracy. I'm going to sign up for it. I could use the review and the critique. I'm hoping the instructors can teach an old noob new tricks and help me improve my speed and accuracy.

The grayscale version of the dot torture target is attached, if you'd like to play along. :D

Thank you for your indulgence,

Hi,

I had an hour to kill yesterday afternoon while Mrs. BassCliff went shopping. Following @KillerFord1977's advice, I left my timer in the range bag and practiced my dot torture drill slow and steady. This was the first dot torture drill from the session, "cold", from five yards.

OK, not too bad for my first effort. I had a couple of really bad runs and had to start all over. Here are a couple of the better efforts.

Hmmm, eight hits in the X ring, one in the 10 ring and a flyer in the 9 ring. Still, this dot torture drill, if I take my time, seems to be helping my concentration. I'll keep it up and see if it translates to my live fire practice. Thanks for playing along! :)

Looking good.
If you compare this to your live fire last round up, your flyers appear to be less prevalent on this laser session 👍👍

Well, this is just what I needed, NOT! But I picked up another G-Sight laser cartridge anyway. I got an email about their new Quantum XG unit. It comes with a replaceable back cap, an extra set of batteries and o-rings, plus five extra striker pads, and it's CHEAP! Only $35.

You can't find this unit on their website yet, only on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/G-Sight-9mm-...1_1?keywords=quantum+xg&qid=1660363531&sr=8-1

Its introductory price is less than half the price their current Gen 3 unit, and even cheaper than what I paid for my older Gen 2 unit. It looks a lot like the Gen 2 unit but has all the replaceable parts like the Gen 3. The striker pads supposedly last 5000 shots and the unit comes with six. I haven't put it in my gun yet but I'll practice with it soon. For those of you who have been looking for a laser cartridge, this is a lot of bang for your buck.

I have to say, “and this is just me” although a great training aid and no doubt a lot of fun my concern would be getting used to shooting without the feel of or anticipation of recoil.
Yes ammunition is expensive but I’d rather train to shoot with the full deal experience.

Aside from that a very good setup.

Agreed. This is not a (live fire) training replacement, it's a supplement. There's no recoil management training when using this tool, just sight picture, sight alignment, trigger pull, getting on target after your draw, even speed reloads, motion while shooting, and shooting around barriers. It's just enough to "scratch my itch" when I can't get to the range. ;)

Hi,

Last night I did some basement laser practice with both of my 9mm pistols. I used the new XG unit in the CW9 because that gun seems to function best with the new laser cartridge. The older cartridges are a little hit-n-miss in that gun. I used the Gen3 unit in my XD9. That's an older Gen2 unit you see in the case.

I had just installed the MCARBO trigger spring kit in the CW9 and wanted to see how it felt. It felt good. This is not me, but here is the procedure.

Yes, there are a lot of distractions in my basement range. It makes the session interesting, especially the westerns playing on the TV.

I shot from thirty feet, just trying to put one hit on each dot with my XD9. I'm working on pure basic accuracy. Here are a few of the better runs.

Then from thirty feet I shot the CW9 at dot #1. That lighter trigger spring kit makes that long trigger pull a bit easier to maintain your sight picture.

About an hour was all the time I had. I think I still need to slow down a bit. It's funny how you can tell everything is perfect and the shot lands right where you want. And then you'll go and pull the trigger knowing it's night right and have a flyer. I think I need to fix something in my brain. :ROFLMAO: But it was a good quick practice session. I went to the range the next day for live fire practice. We'll see if this dry fire helped.

Hi!

I had a nice long laser practice session yesterday, but not with the dot torture drill. This was the first time I've had a chance to work out with my new-to-me Garrison and the new .45 G-Sight ELMS cartridge. I also practiced with my XD9.

AL9nZEUwQk9LmEvDuxEXqivN_X1GOJHGPzyQJ6BmcmqttnHCp4YLb73SCECdv-nRvpqaR62nVGbRTGR5T4TshLlN_j-yPkXX5jHQWddT5-mv-Rw6b1g_Epuxx--72QoHtB6yfGTwOd0G7QtfGq1GjXYnuQxiFg=w1236-h927-no

I have various targets on a basement wall and the TV tuned to a nice Western for a distraction.

For the first part of the session I practiced fundamental marksmanship from ten yards with both pistols.

For the second half of the session I practiced with my XD9, pivoting 90 degrees, presenting, and putting a round on target with the timer. I might post some video and targets of that later for you to critique. The first few strings with my Garrison were head shots.

Then I moved on to adding some motion to my laser practice. It was a good session and I need to do this more often. After all, it costs nothing but time and keeps most of the necessary skills fresh in muscle memory.

Next time I'll work on the dot torture drill with my Garrison.

Hey gang!

I hope you've all been practicing with your lasers. I realize there's no recoil management but the dry fire laser practice reinforces almost all the other skills we are trying to keep up.

It took me a while to get to this little video editing project. I don't often add motion to my basement practice (I should do it more) so I thought I'd take some video of this session in order to critique myself. Here is one of my strings for you to evaluate. I was shooting at thirty feet with a 90° pivot, trying to keep the footwork and presentation adequate for self defense, safety, accuracy, and speed. I'd like to get the shot closer to 2 seconds. Perhaps I will after more practice. I'm headed to the range this evening for a live fire advanced defensive clinic. Should be fun.

Hi,

I finally got around to practicing with my new "intruder" target. I had the Super Bowl on the TV in the basement as a distraction. I sat where I usually sit on the sofa, in the corner. That puts the target a little more than 30 feet away. Here's a view from the bottom of the stairs.

1676274942068.png

I had my Stopbox retention device on the coffee table in front of me.

1676274967207.png

I set up my target and G-Sight phone app at the bottom of the stairs. I used my old phone to take video of myself.

1676274995523.png

I missed pretty much all the first half of the game from practicing. I missed the halftime show too, thank goodness. I was running two phone cameras, one to get the hits on the target and another to video myself. I also put ten hits on the target without the timer just for fun, five center and five head, from my seated position.

1676275035945.png

By the time you see this, the video should be processed and ready for viewing. The Stopbox does take a little practice to utilize it quickly. Here's a few of my better efforts.

Then I settled down and watched the second half of the game. It turned out to be a pretty good game.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Thanks for your postings. Very interesting. Do you know if the G-Sight app will work with any laser cartridge, the Pink Rhino for example? Also, is white or grey targets better than cardboard? Or vice versa? I am getting a lot of undetected hits. Tried moving camera, different color targets etc. using iPhone 14. Not sure if this is the right place to ask these questions so please excuse me if not. Do you know of any forums specific to yhe G-Sight app? Thanks 👍
