Nice read. I will be elk hunting next month and taking a 45-70 with me for hunting in the woods.

The Missouri Conservation Department started reintroducing elk in southern Missouri about 10 years ago. So far the herd is breeding and growing pretty well. This year was the first elk hunt. They drew 5 Missourians lottery style. I'd love to hunt elk in Missouri, but I think by the time their numbers are high enough for a general hunt I'll be dead.

I only grab my 45/70 Marlin if I'm going to dive into the thick stuff for elk. No sense taking a scoped rifle into doghair tree stands were you can't see far.

We have a lottery style draw for elk in here in PA too. I went to the Elk Country visitor center in Benezette this weekend for the first time. The elk are so use to people there that they are walking and laying right along the roads. It seems that nothing bothers them. Some very nice bulls there. Getting me excited for Colorado next month.

Yes have a rifle for watching fields use the 45-70 for the woods. Going to a new spot this year, not sure what all I'm in for.
