Interesting -
I think I did the best of both worlds with my Saint Edge pistols.
I went thru a stage where I built 5 complete ARs and an additional 4(?) complete uppers. It was just something I got into. There was a level of satisfaction in building your own; picking out parts from sales or choosing the exact parts I wanted; internal debates about best barrel length for caliber, etc. Buying the right tools to make everything go together easier was an investment - making it necessary to to build more in the long run to spread over the cost of tools.
I used mostly Aero Precision uppers and lowers with a couple Anderson thrown in. Only had one issue with a build - gas block hole was slightly out of line with the gas tube hole - easy fix after figuring it out. Loved the whole learning experience of building.
I'm not sure building is really cost effective all things considered - especially with the price one can get a decent AR for currently.
Long story short - during Covid, I waited 8 months for a Springfield Saint Edge Pistol I ordered to come in to my LGS. Was in a different shop looking and they told me if they got one in, they'd call me and if I wanted to pass -- no problem. Weeks passed - They called and 45 minutes later the shop I ordered one from called and said they got it in. I bought both.
Wasn't 't sure what I was going to do with both. After a little thought, decided to build a 300 blackout upper for one. Later decided to build a complete upper in 556 with a 11.5" barrel for the original 10.3".
Both shoot great and are my go SBRs. - (these have been posted here before in their stages of evolution)
And some builds - you can see the theme here, that's gold cerakote - (Except for the 14.5" pinned, the other 3 have been reconfirmed back to braced legal pistols and requested to be removed from the registry.)
