Cane For Personal Protection

I've actually come to like the light color. It is the Tung Oil choice. I do wish I had added the grips to horn of the cane. When my hand is sweaty, the horn gets a little slippery. I'm thinking of maybe wrapping the horn with grip tape so it doesn't get slippery. I constantly get compliments about my cane.
I have a new cane coming tomorrow in a lighter color myself. After seeing yours I wanted one with more self defense features and a tad less weight than my walking cane. The cuts on the cane should put me in a sweet spot in weight where I will have both power (weight) and speed plus still staying with hickory.
After my last doctors appointment going over xrays, I see a cane will be part of my life from here forward, so buying another was easy.

You want a Bariatric Cane ... That's what I keep in my truck, I'm disabled and need it most days. Bought mine at Walgreens Drug Store when I was looking to replace my old one that got bent.
Bariatric Canes are made for morbidly obese people ( up to #600 ) and are much more study than most.

I don't want to say that you shouldn't carry a cane but I'd be very wary of how to deploy it, especially in enclosed spaces like a vehicle or hallway and honestly I'd be afraid of having the cane stripped from me and being beaten with it myself. I think pepper spray is better than a cane in 99.9% of scenarios and for 99.9% of people. To generate any kind of damage with a cane you need to swing it hard and that involves having a proper foundation and form to swing it. It's all so situational and depends greatly on your physical ability which if you're carrying a cane for a disability reason, I'd also be skeptical of someone being able to generate the power in any meaningful way.

It just all sounds pretty wishful thinking for me than any real self defense piece.

You must not have read any of my posts on this. My cane is for mobility use first. I am right handed and shoot with my right hand. I am more incapacitated on my left side, so that means a cane is carried on my right side (gun side). I wouldn't waste time with pepper spray when I pocket carry a S&W J-Frame. The cane (carried in my right hand), would hopefully buy me enough time to transition hands so I could draw my pistol. Most people that carry or use canes have no choice in the matter, they physically need them. I don't know anyone who carries a cane just for the sake of carrying it without a true need for it. I don't really have any choice in the matter, as I am disabled and rely on my cane for mobility issues.

Just the statement “to generate any kind of damage with a cane you need to swing it hard” shows how little you know about using a cane for self defense, just saying 😉.

The OP has his thoughts about OC , and it's a semi free country .

For the rest of the audience, there's no reason you can't have a cane And OC .

And there's a whole bunch of things that can be done beyond swinging baseball style . And l don't specifically know canes , but just what is blatantly transferable from 26 inch hickory.

Need can be a spectrum.

There's a segment of the population that can get by without for short periods, but want the support when bad limb gets tired , or has a bad day otherwise.

After Daughter acquired a titanium erector set in her leg after car accident she kept cane / walking stick at close hand for about a year , after first being able to do " own two legs " .

Glad both of mine are fairly new. Left total knee replacement first 6 weeks later right total knee replacement. I only used a cane maybe a week.

I've had total knee replacement on both knees, and am very happy with the results. I no longer have knee pain and the only reason I need the cane is because of my back. Once I am off blood thinners because of a pulmonary embolism I had back in Jan., then maybe the doctor will clear me for the second surgery I need on my back. I can't have that surgery until I am clear of the blood clots in my lungs. After that surgery, I might be able to get by without a cane. The doctor cannot guarantee the second surgery will give me all the relief I need. I have a feeling I will still need the cane as I age. I hope I can lean the cane up against the closet wall for a couple of years, until I need it again.

Well I had back surgery in September last year 7 hrs worth. It’s helped me a lot. I have another one coming but I’m hoping to be able to put it off a few years. He told me my whole lumbar needed to be fused but he didn’t want to keep me under that long. If you are wanting to learn a technique Michelle Janich has some really good stuff. I have a lot of his videos. Good luck with the back surgery and keep us updated.

I now have a second cane in dark brown and although it looks good, my second one also has a streak where the stain came off, and just like the first cane I haven’t found any stain that will stick to the cane. I think it’s due to the treatment they do on the cane. I would never buy another cane with a dark stain.

Just look at it as a racing stripe 😁

Stay away from back fusion as long as you can. Wife has had 4 back surgeries, starting with a laminectomy and ending up with a cage, which can never be removed. Even to the Laser Spine Institute in Tampa, for the tune of $25,000 in 2012. Some relief but only for 6 months. She survives on high doses of morphine and Percocet. Same dosage for decades, so not a junky. My back is bad but her experiences have convinced me to never submit to the knife there!

I have been dealing with back issues and anytime i am in a doctors office many are in there due to issues from their operation they had. What comes to mind everytime I start having pain or issues I remember what some of those patients said, “don’t let them cut you unless you can’t move”.
On top of that, I know many that struggle and are in miserable pain but can’t get any pain medicines because doctors are afraid of perscribing them.

Too late for me to stay away from fusions. My first one was 2014 or 15 can’t remember exactly. I made it for 10 years before having 3 more. My whole lumbar needs fusing. I’ve got really good results from my back surgeries.

I guess I don’t understand how they can fuse the whole lumbar spine 🤔. As I understand it, once they fuse a section it multiplies the stress on the vertebre above and below the fused section, but the whole lumbar spine 🤔.

Yes the fusions put more pressure on the lumbar above in my case 1st fusion was L5-S1. I have severe degenerative disc disease more or less over the past 10 years I no longer have any disc spacing in the lumbar area of my spine. Along with arthritis and severe spinal stenosis the only choice I had was fusions. A spacer was inserted in between my vertebrae and then bone was grounded and packed around the spacer along with a wire cage to hold the bone in place. Titanium rods and screws were put in to hold everything together until the bone became solid. The last surgery took 7 hours to complete 4 to do the fusions 3 to remove the arthritis pressing on the nerve root. I still have severe degenerative disc and severe spinal stenosis in the remaining part of my lumbar that is not fused. The only way to relieve that is to do the same to them as has been done to my lumbar so fusions forL2-L3, L1-L2, which would leave my whole lumbar fused. I’m also looking at having fusions in thoracic and cervical parts of my spine. It sucks but I do get about a decade of pain relief from these surgery’s.

Wow 😲, my heart goes out to you. I have a bunch of stenosis and a bit of arthritis in my lumbar, thoratic (from an accident at work, and in my cervical. This morning Iwoke up with siatica, not bad but I couldn’t go back to sleep. As i posted earlier, I am trying to avoid any surgery because I know it opens the door to more. As I also said, due to the lack of doctors perscibing pain meds if things didn’t go well with an operation, that is a huge factor. But if things get really bad, you gotta do what you gotta do.

You will know when it’s time for surgery. But you can wait to long to where the stenosis or arthritis causes permanent damage to the nerve root and there is nothing they can do for that. Good luck hope the day never comes that you have to have back surgery.
