Challenger Tragedy 40 years ago today.

I remember watching it all unfold my classmates. RIP
I was in class watching it as well. Tragedy.
Also was sitting in my N Tx home and heard the “boom” of the Columbia entering the atmosphere and breakimg apart. Saw that unfold as well. Another tragedy.
God Bless those Astronauts

I was in the Army at that time. Fort Carson, CO to be specific. We were down range on a field training exercise. I was driving an APC when I heard about it. Our crew had modified the intercom system of the APC so we could hear music in our CVC helmets. Totally against regulations. We had it set on a local radio station to listen to music, when the DJ broke in and announced the news. Years later, I also witnessed the pieces of the blown-up Columbia re-entering the atmosphere and burning up. I was on a dive job working off a barge offshore near the TX/LA state line. I couldn't figure out what all the contrails in the sky were about. Then one of the barge crew told us the news.

I lived in Hudson Florida on the Gulf Coast. I got sent home from work that morning because it was too cold to lay block.

From where I lived you can actually see the space launches. I remember sitting on my front porch watching The Challenger go up and I saw the trail split and I knew something had gone wrong and then I heard it on the news.

I also remember going to work the next day and hearing all the rumors. The Russians did it. The CIA did it. The CIA did it to make it look like the Russians did it. We're going to start a war with Russia over it.

People were going crazy

I remember watching it all unfold my classmates. RIP
I was at the alert facility at Elmendorf AFB getting ready to launch some F15's. Captain drove out and told us to shutdown and explained what had just happened. We all went inside and watched the tv.

We were getting ready to tee off at Glenbrook Golf Course in Houston, watching the launch in the clubhouse. We absolutely could not believe what we were seeing. Tragic day for sure.
Snow skiing at Vail when the Columbia event went bad.
Events etched in my mind that I will never forget where and when.

I was home watching on the telly. I knew immediately what happened. I remember family members being led away from a stage from where they were watching. To this day, I turn away whenever a rocket or missile launches in movies. They bring back horrific memories and I still get mysty even after all this time.
