Chestnuts are very difficult to find on the East Coast. Chestnut trees died out over a hundred years ago. The nuts you see today for sale are probably from hybrid trees that can resist the chestnut tree disease.

Those were the American chestnut that died off, but European chestnuts that are resistant are readily available. Cooked and skinned chestnuts are widely available online, and can also be found in good grocery stores and gourmet shops.
