I love my 270 and my 7mm but honestly my favorite all arounder is .308 hands down. If ammo price were a big consideration as mentioned in the article I would probably want a round that can be shot in many different rifle formats (platforms)... not too many 270 or 7mm SBRs out there but you can get dang near any kind of gun in .308 these days. Of course as it pertains to hunting specifically, range, terrain and target are what really matters I guess.

ahhh very true, for me it was Grandads over under he gave me. I recon everything I hunted for my formative years was with a 410/22

Mine was a k98 that my dad bought me at the Interarms retail store in Alexandria, Virginia. Soon after I got a Remington 742 in 6mm Remington. It was a deer gun in November and a groundhog gun the rest of the year

Right before I joined the Navy, I gave that gun to the young neighbor boy who had recently lost his dad to a heart attack in his late 30s. That's the only gun I feel good about losing.

Had been a bow hunter forever, but found myself signed up for an elk hunting trip. I researched enough to narrow the field and went shopping.
300WM checked all my boxes including availability. I knew what I was getting but I didn’t realize how much of it I was getting. The one wise decision I made and stick to even now, I never shoot more than 10 rounds in a range trip, usually 5 gives me what I need.
As a positive result I found I needed much more shootable guns in the safe, you know like a 45/70, and 3 1/2” 12ga. I still suffer from tomuchitis, but a young grandson has given me pause. A 300BO and a Grendel have come home now.

Okay, if we're talking air guns, I had the Sheridan too! Got that around age 11 or 12. 1965-ish. 10 pumps maxed it out.
Those vintage Sheridans aren't cheap. Replacing the seals might be fun. They're worth it.
Going back farther, I had a lever-action BB gun that was CO2 powered and even farther, in 1964, a 1911-looking BB gun pistol that was good for about 15 feet.
Slavia 618 .177 spring powered pellet rifle, Christmas 1958. Slayed many a Bluejay at my Grandma’s “don’t you ever shoot my songbirds but get everyone of those bluejays you see”. Also destroyed a zillion tin cans and bagged my first squirrel and first bunny with it

Yes, I kept the Marlin 336 CB in 30-30 with 24" barrel. Think I paid close to $400 for it. I understand they are pretty hard to find the days...
