Curtiss P-36 Hawk: Hero Plane of Pearl Harbor?

The P-36 later evolved into the XP-37 and XP-40 with both having the cockpit move rearward and the Allison V-1710 inline installed.

One of the XP-40, the prototype of the famous Curtiss P-40 was converted from a P-36A.

The P-40 also evolved into the P-40N, and it's last form, the XP-40Q.

The Curtiss XP-40Q Warhawk was a 1943–1944 experimental development program aimed at upgrading the P-40 to match newer fighters, featuring a two-stage supercharged Allison V-1710 engine, bubble canopy, and clipped wings. Although reaching speeds over 420 mph, the three prototypes arrived too late to enter production over superior types like the P-51.

They got a lot of mileage out of the P-36.
