Those things are old and unserviceable by now...

Not so! I still have one. And a long time ago, I learned there's this thing called T9 Word that not only makes the 3-for-1 unnecessary, but often will predict what you're spelling and save you extra keystrokes. The only drawback to this ingenious feature is you have to know how to spell!
