Diagnosing Inaccuracies: Is It You or Your Gun?

Hello all, here is today's article posted on TheArmoryLife.com. It is titled “Diagnosing Inaccuracies: Is It You or Your Gun?” and can be found at https://www.thearmorylife.com/diagnosing-inaccuracies-is-it-you-or-your-gun/.

I know it is me. Now Question. I'm new and 69 years old. I wouldn't take a shot at 25 yards unless there was no one close. I trained at 3/7/15 yards for Texas Licence to carry. I have no chance of a 4" Circle at 25 yards. 1" at 3 yards, 10" at 7 Yards, and 15" at 15.

Yes I continue to shoot and get better. Shooting the human / 27" Texas target I can keep my rounds inside all lines at 15 yards. At 25 I haven't really spent anytime. But no I can't keep a 4" spread at that distance.

If 25 yards is the standard and just passing an easy test / being able to hit a human body shoulder to waist isn't enough to carry...

So if that is the standard I shouldn't own much less carry a gun.

Note most people I see at ranges can't shoot as well as I do. I'm scared to death about ever having to fire in anger - not because of killing a criminal - but because of the possibility of missing and taking out an innocent. So I practice and work.

People make shooting a gun way harder than it is. Most people go to the range and blaze away leaving a target that looks like they were using a shotgun, and are completely incapable of diagnosing and correcting themselves - a lot even with competent instruction. The average shooter is just that. Average.
Being new I compare shooting to a golf swing. Stance, Stroke/back swing, Aim/weight shift and trigger pull / keeping head down release.. For me stance / Aim / breathing / finger trigger / release. For me a Challenger I'm enjoying.

Work as an RSO, andh ave to say new(ish) shooters with red dots, or experienced shooters that get red dots to help with their accuracy almost always are constantly fiddling with their sights as it is so easy - and chasing their bad habits instead of working on shooting better. One of my big complaints about the red dots - too easy to fiddleF with it than to work on better groupings. It is the latest iteration of the "I'll just aim high right so I hit the center" types.

People tend to forget that ANYONE can shoot a gun, but it takes skill and PRACTICE to do it well and accurately.
I feel like an idiot. :) I Never questioned the sights or the DOT.

Welcome to the forum! And welcome to the club. I didn't start seriously training and practicing until later in life. The summer of 2020 began my quest for self-defense and marksmanship. I get a lot of great tips from the folks around here but it seems my gun collection grows bigger faster than my grouping grows smaller. Dang enablers.

With handguns I train and practice at personal defense distances, 5-7-10-15 yards at most. Sometimes, just for fun, I'll send a target out to 25 yards. But if a threat is that far away I can probably retreat, leave the area, find cover, etc.

Good to have you here. I must ask you something everyone is dieing to know. Do you have a Hi-Point? They are loved around these parts.

Thank you for your indulgence,
