The article called it ding dong ditch, which is different from the new trend of pounding/kicking on the door making it seem like a home invasion.
The media are now using the term ding dong ditch for the latter scenario to make it seem like “just an innocent prank gone wrong.”
It is unclear what type if “game” the kid was playing. But if he was running away there is no way he should have been shot. Bad call on the homeowner’s part.

The problem is that kids/teens are not simply "ringing a doorbell and running", they are pounding on the doors. In some twists on this, they are literally kicking the doors. You also had those thugs that dressed as LEOs and shot into a home after banging on the door. With all the craziness and violence going on right now, it is no surprise that people are scared enough to think the worst is happening, and acting accordingly.

Kicking down a door and ringing a doorbell are 2 different things.
Also, blasting at someone at your door when you don’t know who they are or what they intend to do is not correct either.

I live in the toolies. You ring my doorbell or beat on the door in the middle of the night, I will get up to see who’s there, and I will be armed. I’m not shooting anybody but I will be cautious and I will NOT be opening the door for ANY stranger. You kick in the door, that’s on you and I will be stopping you, whoever you may be.

Kids ringing doorbells and running is just kids being stupid, anyone kicking in a door for “fun” is asking for trouble and should not be surprised when they find it. Very, very different things,

Well, to be perfectly honest on this whole thing, there is no excuse for using a firearm on someone banging on your door or ringing the doorbell. In this day and age of ring doorbell cameras, security cameras and all this linked to your smartphone, you have the ability to see who is at your door regardless of the time of day or night. You have the ability to make a judgement call from the safety of your bedroom with that camera or security system. We have a security system with cameras at all outside doors or access points, which we have an app on our phones for. The cameras alert us to movement, even before they get into knocking/ringing distance. There are many ways to ascertain just who is at your door, courtyard, back yard, etc. And, I don't care where you live, shooting a fleeing person in the back is a serious NO-NO.

not everyone can afford a ring door bell, or security cameras.........for some people either on Social Security, or working but not earning enough money to either pay the rent of eat that month, they just cannot fork over that money.

unless we all know the monetary situation of that homeowner, one simply cannot assume he shoulda, coulda had such a set up.

this is a world of the "have and have nots"

not a world of "we all have everything cuz we ALL have the money to do so"......

Unless you look thru a ring camera or actually open the door you have no clue as to thier intent or even who it is.

we do not know the neighborhood, it could be a violent one, or one prone to home invasions, or attacks in the driveway..

we do not know the make up of the residents, meaning various things.

we do not know the age of the home owner, male, or female, young or old, previously a victim of any sort of crime, and maybe has been thru this before where someone rang the doorbell to "check if anyone is home", then bashed in the door, and beat this person to near death.

we do not know the financial capability of the home owner, ability to move away or NOT.

what we DO KNOW is the kid was out "late at night" in my opinion...what is "late at night for an 11 year old..???"

to me, after 7 PM.

kids will be kids, they goof off.

there is a time that it should end, and again to me, 7PM.

again, it all falls on the parents, and THEIR RESPONSIBILITY, to be PARENTS.

one less thug in the making, off the streets, is what "i see".

no need to pay for a ring doorbell, security cameras or a peep hole.......cheap way to look out.

my 1st floor tenant opens up the kitchen window, and can look at the rear where the doorbells are, and ask, "who da fook are you"?

get it...?? not everyone has what you think they should have......

I just checked in and it seems like initial reports they were straight up doing ring/knock and run. They weren't shot through the door, the guy came out of his house and shot as they were running away. Really messed up.

That is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of. 30 years ago when i was a kid we used to do that any never a worry we were going to get shot. What the f is wrong with people now.

Close down the mental institutions, soft on crime, no one is at fault they have a sickness as opposed to being just bad/evil, the deliberate destruction of the family, lack of teaching and demanding respect for others, ""let it all hang out" "you do you" "what is normal/why be normal" attitudes, and so on. Add to that as a society we have taken childhood from children (and given it to lazy/useless/irresponsible adults ).
I live half a mile from where I grew up. As a kid people would leave their keys in the car, in the ignition, for weeks and months at a time. Would leave home to go to the city and leave the house doors open. Not unlocked, wide open. The place I grew up didn't even have a door latch, just a handle to pull it open. It was held closed by friction. It is nothing like that now. Add to that CNN and its imposters with 24/7 news. Got to fill that airtime with something, people won't watch story after story of cat rescued from tree, so no advertisers. People are more afraid some justified, some manufactured, some imagined.
Lastly this is from the NY Post. It is easy to see that the coverage is slated ("gunned down" I.E.). I'll wait for more info before condemning nor Monday morning quarterbacking.

We had that stuff 30 years ago just didn’t have as good a publicist (the internet). In some places it was worse! Maybe there were these kinds of shootings as well we just didn’t hear about it .

Get what you’re saying but checked from multiple sources this morning. All initial reports and the guy was detained and not formally charged.

We are not "gazillionaires". Middle class. And, not everybody can afford a house with a 2nd floor front porch. Nor do they have a first floor tenant. My point, is that there are alternatives to going to the extremes that these people do. Peep holes are as cheap as $7. We got a DIY system because that is what we can afford. I add to it as I can afford to do so. We have a budget, just like everybody else. I most certainly cannot justify the expense of some of the firearms that some of you seem to be able to afford. No way I can justify anything over $900. If that is a "gazillionare", I would hate to be a "bagazillionare".

me and then us (wife and i as well) regarding not having to lock our doors to the house or the cars.

the "other side" of the isle always has to embellish things to garner viewers, and advertisers, that's been going on for decades as well.

and yes..."its the never my fault, but your fault", mentality.

i got the razor strop (real name for the razor strap) when i was a kid, and if not that.."the belt".......sometimes a good walloping slap when no belt or strap was around....

i grew up respecting law and order and my mom and dad.

and we raised OUR kids that way as well.

but the neighborhood isn't exactly the best of worlds
if kid had shot through the door, things would be vastly different, and different conversation

for us you have to go through a gate, to get to the porch, and then cross porch to get to the door
i know long before person that they have crossed the line at the gate
i can see if they are a known person or not.
