First Look: Julie Golob Reviews the 4" SA-35

Good friends: Why the fixation with Parabellum? 10 is king, 9 is court jester. FBI study? Fiddlesticks! A 10mm is mastered with correct grip and a comp’d shooting instrument. I yet wait for an Echelon 4.0 Comp in 10 millimeter. Cheers!

I’ve really admired the SA-35 series of pistols since they came out. But I’d left handed and a single action pistol with a right hand only safety is useless to me.

Not just for left handed shooters. If a RH shooter gets injured and needs to fire with their left hand, wouldn’t it be critical that they can put the pistol on and off safe without fumbling?

There are pistol designs on the market that have fully ambi controls. That’s not necessary. Most RH controls can be worked around. But not the safety on a single action design. It’s critical that a shooter can easily be able to control if a pistol is on or off safe.

If they are going to “update” the safety on the SA-35, then they need to make it useable by either hand. Massive flaw in an excellent design.

The 10mm Auto won't work in the BHP-platform.

BTW - SA merely provides their SA-35's with the same Mecgar 15-rd magazines that's been around for decades. They didn't invent the 15-rd BHP magazine.

Right, thanks. I’ll be waiting for Springfield’s Echelon 4.0 Comp chambered in 10mm then. Bad guys are becoming more sophisticated now, wearing lite body armor. And a 10 may be better for wilderness carry. Thanks again 🫡

HS Produkt/SA would have to design a new Echelon to handle the 10mm Auto since the current model can't.

However, SA does have the 10mm in the XDm-Elite in four models, and they're excellent pistols for the 10mm. I use the 10mm XDm-Elite's immediate predecessor (same pistol w/o the Elite-trigger) when out & about in my "woods".

A skilled gunsmith would be able to fit an after-market ambi safety to the SA-35 models.

The fire control mechanisms in the BHP are a bit tricky, thus the requirement for a gunsmith with BHP experience. And the SA-35 fire control mechanism seems to have some differences to get a lighter trigger pull thus another reason for a skilled gunsmith.

I think SA hit a major home run with the design of their manual safety. Its far better than the original and even better than the C&S which I have in one of my guns.
Unfortunately they won't sell it to regular customers. They consider it a safety item that must be fitted by a competent gunsmith. :(

Really nice to know, thx Talyn. The XD-M Elite’s lack compensators, but I imagine the recoil can be managed with correct grip and a Pearce grip extension for the 3.8”. Hoping though that it can handle my 1500 fps Underwood Xtreme Penetrator fluted cartridges. Stout loads! Thanks again for reply.

I run Buffalo Bore loads thru both my 10mm 5.25 & 3.8 compact (both non-compensated) and they are easier to handle than in my 10mm Glocks.

BTW, while the XDm 5.25 is discontinued Springfield offers an separate 5.28" extended threaded barrel that fits the XDM-E 4.5 so one can thread a compensator on to it if one wants a compensator.
