With archery season going now here, and thru rifle season which opens next month there's always a high risk of a griz encounter when they're trying to prepare for hibernation.
The Augusta area is prime Griz country along the southern Rocky Mountain front, and just SE of the "Bob".

And when the speaker of the”wilderness”, it’s just that. You are on your own-and need to prepare and act accordingly. I love it, but it’s not a place for those who think critters are all like Bambi or Gentle Ben…

I can't speak to the rules of Montana, but at one time in Arizona, if it was archery season, firearms were not allowed to be in your possession.

In Montana you can carry a firearm when archery hunting but it cannot be used to harvest the game that the hunter is pursueing with a bow.
BTW the archer was on state-owned land that is also used to graze cattle, thus due to the close distance to a dead cow, so the bear was likely defending the carcass.
Griz encounters are often sudden and at very close range so reaction time can be very limited.

For those out of the Region, basically everything west of I-15, south of I-90/94 west of Billings is Griz country. However, Griz are expanding and occuring outside these areas.
