I was going to pick "Sword", but I'm between shankers right now. So I went with "Pistol". This is where my Judge rules the roost. For me.

I even have a holster for it. Weird.

Personally I'm not a big fan of the Judge, but believe it or not that's my wife's EDC. Hollow point 45's and 410 buck in alternating cylinders. She occasionally complains about the weight, but never the effectiveness if necessary.

My dogs have different barks depending on what they sense. I get concerned at what I call their "get your gun Papa" bark, which up till now has just announced an opossum on the porch. Not to be confused with the "UPS Delivery" bark, or "The Grandkids Are Here" bark.
I love the idea of dogs and have almost always had a couple I could depend on for many things ... stranger awareness being one of them. However, since the wife and I moved here to the 'institution', having another one is almost out of the question. We still had one when we moved in about 7 years ago, but living on any but the ground floor makes it hard to get them in and out to do business, exercise, etc. It's harder on the dog than to us and because of that we chose to not get another one.

Oh yeh, that and the wife is getting on up in age and it's gettin' harder for her to. Now y'all know I have a sense of humor, but I always look out for my dogs. ;) :)

Some of the recent replies have a touch of humor which I always enjoy, and some of them offer some real food for thought. One of my thoughts is and has been that a handgun w/some amount of user proficiency is more suited to home defense simply due to the ease of handling and concealment in close surroundings. I'm not saying that's the ultimate for everyone, but for me it just makes more sense.

What is your preferred home defense weapon that you keep nearby for this purpose.

I keep a 10in SBR AR in .300blk suppressed with a pressure switch light mounted by my bedside in the event that something goes bump in the night then I can bump back quietly...🤫

Home Defense Options

1. Locked doors
2. Dusk to dawn security lighting
3. Thor
4. Zee
5. If that all fails, I have one loaded handgun, and a hand light, in each of three safes, opened via fingerprint or 4 digit code

Dogs are inside dogs, but we go out and play in yard a couple of times each day. Zee is slowing down a bit; Thor is the EverReady Bunny reincarnated - like all Boxers 😂!

Thor, 100% Boxer, going on 7 (April 2026 - had him since 6 months old)

Zee, 60% Staffordshire Terrier, 20% Lab, 13% American Bulldog, 7% other (Embark DNA, going on 12 (October 2026 - had him since 4 months old)

Our 120lb Bouvier has a bark that seems to discourage solicitors during the day. At night the effect is amplified😏. I wouldn’t come into this house at night without calling out to the Bear so he knows it’s Dad😳. I worked on the road a LOT over the years. Always thought the wife was fine between the dog and her handgun skills (even though she did have a Glock in those days🙄)
