How do you cycle your carry ammo?

I generally carry my Sig 320 RXP X COMPACT, ROMEO 1 PRO, I just check the mag every other day and replace however many rounds it fired on it's own while i was sleeping.

I like rotating my tires….every other oil change. Ammo?
Why? A solution in search of a problem?

Hmmmm…..maybe I need to rotate my shocks? Coil springs?

Seriously, I don’t see the need/point. I’d also not want to cycle/recycle for fear of bullet setback. But that’s just me. YMMV.

That said I don’t rwchamber a whole lot as I have zero kids in my house or that visit .

That said I change out my duty ammo about every 6-8 months. Sooner if I am stuck in a monsoon.

Whem I did real municipal LE and was in and out of hot/humid wet/cold several times a shift I changed out a little earlier

My Wheelguns about once a year!

Same 6-8 months run my 2 EDC mags (7 rnds each plus the one in the camber, I'm in NY).
 
There is a difference between loaded mags that sit in your safe in guns that rarely get carried and the one in the guns you carry daily. The former is no different than the ammo that you have in the boxes sitting in green cans in your closet which you regularly rotate into your carry guns.

Maybe 3-4 times a year at the range I’ll empty the mags I actually carry on a target to be replaced with “ fresh” ammo after I clean the weapon.

True.

I take my bedside pistol out about once a year, though, and still put the ammo that’s been in it downrange, just because. And since it’s a revolver, there’s no need to replace a chambered round.

Most of the other HD guns, though…just don’t get the loads cycled. They get taken out occasionally and run, but…nowhere near the frequency of carry guns.

When it is sitting in a box sure carried in and out of hot humid cold wet climates will break it down. As will re chambering. In extreme case of 2 in the 90’s a couple LEOnKotorcycle cops had vibrations wear the brass down in their 9mm so bad the cartridge had a cut where powder spilled out. They obviously never changed mags out for years.

Shotgun rounds were also susceptible. After getting rattled around in a squad the buck would wear flat spots in it and have inconsistent flight patterns so most places leaned to change them out the same time.

Sitting in the same climate though indefinitely. My agency had a 5 year expiration date stuff never used was rotated to trainjng at 5 years. Stuff issues was taken back at 90 days and rotated to training!

To take it a step further, the ammo in your EDC mags keep getting bumped around in the same spot, it will cause wear in that spot. So every now and again, you take the ammo out of your mag and shuffle it around to "even the wear" and make it last longer. Much like rotating your tires.

I do actually unload the carry mags sometimes and reload the same ammo back in the mag. Not super often though.

My example of the motor cop was in an article by Mas Ayoob 30 years ago.

That was an extreme and you will be fine if you replace them every 6-12 months.

Most cops treat their ink pin better than their duty gun…Fact!

Is save the mail polish for the front sight and front sight only.
Quality self defense ammo has proven techniques with the lacquer they seal primers with.

So I wouldn’t worry about going that far especially with mail polish as that stuff can damage the cartridge
