How is your 1911 set up?

Pieter, Wilson Combat made the checkering strip held on by the grips. Not as aggressive as "proper" checkering, but better than nothing. Once you have a 1911 with checkering or stippling, it is hard to go back.

Another vote for the arched mainspring housing, even though I started with a Gold Cup as my first 1911. I think that is how many gunsmiths in the early days made their guns look distinctive at a glance without a ton of shop time. Long triggers and flat mainspring housings. I always went with a long trigger, until I shot a short trigger that had been tuned. Unless you have really long fingers, a long trigger is simply not needed. We thought we liked them better because they had been tuned up. Tune up a short trigger and you will return to the short trigger!

I have some that are still factory. I have changed stuff on others. A Range Officer, I upgraded the bomar styled sights to bomar styled night sights from Kensights, added ambi-safety and checkered the front strap. The Fusion Firearms commander I carry is stock other than the grip and trigger poundage( had to increase the trigger weight). The STI Sentry .40 I have is still stock.

know somebody makes or at least made a thin stippled piece for the front of the grip that was held in place by the grips. Does anybody still make that?

WIlson makes a very thin front strap slip on piece, in black or stainless. I had one but got rid of it. IMHO, they're not made wide enough to slip under the grips and reliably stay in place. You can use carpet tape to hold it in place, but you shouldn't have to.
I found this alternative to grit tape for the front strap. It's flexible and matches the checkering on my Double DIamond G10 grips perfectly and gives me just the right amount of friction w/o being to rough on the fingers or clothes. Easy to cut to the shape, width and length you want. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G231FCJL?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1

Any problems with it peeling?

When the weather is cool enough that I am not sweating up a storm I carry a pair of blued standard full-size Springfield Garrisons. I find that they are set up absolutely "goldilocks" for my taste. The left one is named Yosemite and the right one is named Sam.

I find that the Springfield Garrisons have all of the mods I want and none that I don't. Initially, the only change I made was to switch the grip escutcheons from the thin grip ones to convention thick. I replaced the stocks with some nice durable ones made from G10. I later did a dehorn job and added Wilson Combat mag wells. Those took A LOT of blending!! These changes were not absolutely necessary, just something I did based on personal preferences.

I also have to wear suspenders to help keep my pants from sliding off. LOL

The Springfield line offers so many choices, it makes it easy to buy "off the rack" with no changes needed. Good sights right from the factory...that is the main thing. But they hold such tight tolerances you can mix and match...I have a "Loaded" lower because of the features it offered, but could not stomach the forward cocking serrations. Personal preference. But adding a Mil-Spec upper to my Stainless Loaded Lower gave me what I wanted, including the "California Style" two tone Pachmayr Combat Special look I admired in Ray Chapman's holster as a kid at the local range.

Nice!! A few years ago I would have called you a liar because Springfield's fitment was all over the map. In recent years, they've been far better. The ability (sometimes) to swap things around is one of the miracles of modern CNC production methods.
