How Much Ammo Should I Carry?

Most of the time in summer, I carry my Smith model 638. A five shot 38 spl. Would I want more rounds in an extended fight? Yeah. But for the vast majority of a threat I might face, this is enough. And I don’t worry about having a defective magazine.

An important point about carry ammo: if you cycle it in and out of the chamber multiple times (often rotating the same top two rounds in your carry mag when you empty the gun to shoot cheaper ammo for practice), you can break the little primer pellet and then that high quality, expensive defensive round will be a dud. It’s happened to me twice—fortunately discovered while shooting up my carry ammo on the range and not in some dark parking lot. In fairness, I had probably unloaded and reloaded those two rounds in the top of my carry mag several dozen times each.

Now, I'm gentle in re-chambering my carry ammo after a range session, being careful to ensure that the slide still fully returns to battery. AND, I shoot-up and replace my EDC mag ammo every few months.

Tom Givens advocates, out of an abundance of caution, replacing any defensive rounds that have been chambered more than twice.

A new box of carry ammo once per year seems to me to be cheap insurance.

I shoot my carry gun about every week so I do unload and re-load my carry ammo quite a bit. I agree you can only do that a certain number of times. I shoot up my carry ammo every 6 months and have not had a problem with it not going bang
