In the competition shooting world, Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC) matches are all the rage. However, each passing year sees more models that fit the term, even when many are not built specifically for matches. In fact, a number of these short guns can be practical hunting options.

Before Indiana allowed full powered rifle rounds I took a couple deer with my Marlin 1894c 357 which was a great performer within its range limits (ran Hornady 140 Leverevolution) as was a 44 Mag equivalent.

As far as any AR or semi auto cartridge chambering. Like anything shot placement and good bullet selection. Even then I’d limit it to 10mm, 40 S&W and 45 acp

That’s just me though!

Back in the late 1800's and early 1900's, before the new smokeless .30-30 became the "ultimate deer cartridge" of the day, the black powder .38-40 was touted as an acceptable deer slayer. Ballistically, the .38-40 and .40 S&W performance is practically identical. I've taken half a dozen or so whitetails in the Arkansas big woods with a .357 lever gun, but I've been considering trying out my first generation Ruger PC4 carbine in .40 S&W for some up close deer hunting.

It always seems funny how what’s old becomes new again. 38-40 then 40 S&W 38 Super then 357 Sig

6.5x55 Swed 260 Rem then 6.5 Creed

Etc etc etc

Gotta admit I’m partial to a ‘92 Winchester in 357 and a’94 Marlin in .44😊. Not exactly modern PCC’s, but darn effective hunting rifles.
