IDPA website hurts my head.

I am restarting looking at doing matches again. The only reason I put it on hold was that work got in the way (doing 68 hours a week for 9 months). I know there’s 2 groups out there and started looking into IDPA and instantly started getting frustrated. My location along I-80 in Illinois doesn’t help either. All the “good” ranges are minimum 45 minutes away to ask. Yes I been asked to join at 2 ranges to do matches but my work schedule (2 shift bites).

My question is. Any matches held on weekends? Is IDPA worth it?

I just looked at my local IDPA club's schedule. Seems all of their matches are on a Saturday, monthly. I should probalby join. It looks like fun.

I use to be a Match director and attempted to run a Sanctioned club til low numbers cause us to shut down.

Out of the 2 majors ones IDPA is more normal with no John Wick foot races for the most part.

That said the rule book and a lot of the it to win it competitors can be too much. So don’t let those folks spoiling for you go have fun and don’t

While I won’t say it’s training it is good practice for shooting around corners, multiple targets and angles ,reloading and general testing you gear.

The other thing is there are a group of ranges that have CCW matches, these are usually set up in an IDPA type formate except without the silly rules. Here we have participants sign up for a hour block and the show up armed loaded (they have a chance to change out social ammo for ball at the line) and they shoot all 7-9 stages at a time. Stopping just enough to rop off magazines etc They are out in minutes and not married to the range for 6-8 hours. (Also great as wives can wait in the car before you follow them around that thrift store or whatever, ask me how I know)

So that xoukd be another option

Yeah, the club closest to me says they have about 70 members and is not a high-pressure, elite competition operation. They use regular CCW gear and are all about safety and improving skills. They don't use race gear or competition firearms, just the regular stuff we use to protect ourselves. It sounds like it would be fun for this old man. ;)
