Is the AR-15 a Good Choice for a Beginner?

it's a great choice. so much so that military and law enforcement around the world have it as their primary rifle for ease of use and to train. regardless of gender and stature, an AR15 style weapon is easy to adapt to size of user.
my 95lb 4'11" daughter has a custom build SBR for her small stature and she can wield that thing with deadly precision.
light recoil and ease of configuration is key to the AR15. my son got his first AR15 at 8 years old and was dropping hogs shortly thereafter.

So scary it terrifies 6 year old children .... We did work on technique, he got quite good

Kids need to learn the value of that first shot, so they learned the importance of it with single shot rifles. That was many moons ago. Now those guns that they are very proud of are sitting next to their AR's and other assortments of weapons. Wherever they got that from, I don't know.
Be kind and rewind.

I agree with Hawgleg44. A single shot rifle may teach your youngin' the value of making the first round count!
True enough, but if the kid is as serious as I was about hitting his mark, others will do as well. Mine was a Winchester model 250 lever action, tube feed. I knew that if the first shot was a miss, my quarry probably wouldn't sit there for a second shot.

The first time ever experiencing shooting of any kind was with my dad and his friends in the Cascades when I was about 8 years old. We were there for fishing the river, but the guys brought me along on a walk with them while plinking with their .22s. I recall a chipmunk and the smell of gun powder. It may seem strange, but I loved that smell. Or maybe the smell of the adventure in general.
