Is the AR Past Its Prime?

Hello all, here is today's article posted on TheArmoryLife.com. It is titled “Is the AR Past Its Prime?” and can be found at https://www.thearmorylife.com/is-the-ar-past-its-prime/.

When I came off active duty I had a list of defensive tools I wanted. The AR-15 was on that list. Not because I liked the platform all that much, but because of almost a decade of training, qualifying, and knowing the general maintenance of a M16A1. It was years until I was able to check it off my list. I'd grown older and my eyes would no longer reach out for those 500 yd iron sight attempts. The platform changed and evolved. So did my abilities and expectations. Thus, my possession is a close cousin of my familiar old friend.

Love mine. Can do a lot with them. Even more options available than the worlds greatest handgun, the Glock (insert model number here)🤪.

IMHO, the ARxx platform still has a lot of life left. Although my favorite rifle is my 1953 Springfield Armory M1Garand
Ditto. Old Match tuned M1 from the 40’s. Never was a fan of the AR myself. I’ve owned a few, ranging from the original triangular hand guard AR (which wouldn’t group in a bucket) to a Colt flat top Match which was pretty decent on accuracy and a couple others,. Never did find one I actually liked the feel of in hand. Different strokes for different folks. I dumped my last on 4 or 5 years ago. Doubt I’ll ever try another

In 1972, Uncle Sam handed me a M-16A1. It was a POS! Damned things were prone to all manner of problems. I never did like it and never wanted one. 🤬
But in 2018, the antis were pushing hard to ban them. So I figured I might as well get one while I could. I bought a S&W M&P 15 Just to have one. Honestly, I don't shoot it much.
3 years later, I stumbled into a great deal on a used Colt A2 Sporter that I just couldn't turn down. I changed to the old style triangular handguards and this is my "nostalgia" rifle as its so much like what my Uncle gave me back in the 70s. Again, I don't shoot this one much either.
Then last year, again I stumbled into a good deal on a used S&W 15-22. Well I do have a great fondness for .22s of all kinds, so I bought that one.
So, here I am, a guy who hates the whole M-16/AR-15 style of rifle and I have 3 of 'em.
But the fact is that if the S ever does HTF, the AR will be the most common rifle to be found along with ammo and magazines. So I guess everybody should have at least one.

well here in my BLUE state, as of July 1st...they are outlawed......i drove by 1 LGS, the one i usually always go to, and there was a line out the door, for either picking up the one they bought after the 8 day waiting time, or trying to buy one NOW....but the 8 day waiting time is well.......now past its time....but if anyone has a CCW, they can walk out with the purchase...

this even includes any transfers...the 8 day waiting period,

so, many will be SOL...........

so yeah...HERE....the AR's are "past thier prime"

of course, this law too, is already making its way into the courts, as against the 2nd amendment....

I do in fact have only 1. It lives in my truck along with 5) 30rnd mags.

I always managed to qualify expert so yeah I've got a few along with magazines and some boolits to go with them. Is it the best rifle going? I don't know but I'll keep on with my poodle shooters and 1911s. Go with what ya know.

There's not much more you can do to improve the platform aside from ammo (Federal Peak cases) & barrel life (directly related to handling the Federal Peak ammo improvements).

The aftermarket has developed all the relative improvements for the rest of it.
