It took more than 50 years but I am there

Throughout a long career as an LEO and trainer, military, hunter, and all around gun enthusiast. I have owned, carried, used, and learned to maintain a plethora of different firearms. And I cannot count the number of holsters and accessories I have used.

But I think I have winnowed down the dizzying array of possibilities to what suits me. A Krieghoff skeet gun, a Browning ultra light Citori bird gun, a Browning BAR Safari II 7mm mag big game rifle for sport. For serious business, my EDC is a SA1911 TRP CC 45acp with weapon light and optic, a SIG 516 with weapon light and ACOG, a Remington 870 Marine Magnum with weapon light and night sights, and finally a CMMG Banshee in 45acp with optic and weapon light. (If possible this would be an MP5). My thinking is, if I were to go out again as a young officer or agent hunting miscreants, I would be comfortable having these options. Of course there are interchangeable alternatives in the vault that I could pick up and use with confidence, but those mentioned above are the lineup it has boiled down to. So even though it has taken more than 50 years, finally my quest for armament is complete.

Until of course something new catches my eye.....

Sounds good to me. As a side note I seen some recent sof pics and the guys were carrying sub machine guns. Bet they run thru a fat mag really really fast. Not sure what they were looked almost like uzis with suppression

I break down my guns into hunting and tactical. Hunting guns depend on game types (small, large, and dangerous). My hunting guns vary from a 10/22 to a Lever action 30-30 to bolt guns in 308, and Double Rifles in 45-70 and 470 NE, plus a couple SxS shotguns and a few hunting handguns. Im also a fan of the T/C Encore so barrels from 30 cal to 500S&W. Additionally there are the historic guns like my Martini Henrys and Lee Speed

Tactical guns are divided into concealment, low key and full blown GoToWar. Concealment includes handguns, and small PDWs (handgun chassis based, eg. FLUX). Low Key includes small SMG/PCC (MP5K, Colt DOE 9mm SMG). The GoToWar category, I further break down into mission and location (Urban vs Rural). For Urban Im still a fan of the Rem 870 shotgun, especially with short barrels (10-14 inches). Ill give up extended capacity for a more maneuverable size. An alternative to shotguns are the full size SMGs (Sterling, Colt SMG). Once into suburban/rural ranges Im still a 5.56 AR fan, and perhaps a 308 AR depending if extended ranges or hard barriers are expected. Ive reached that stage in life where I wont be going on any long distance humps, so Ive added a few neighborhood support weapons. Nothing says Road Closed like a Beltfed and Grenade launcher.

I suppose I could narrow my collection to a few less guns; but what? I have great joy deciding what I need next and how to kit them out with lights lasers and night vision. Sure a _____ can do this and this and that; but I prefer specialized tools for specialized tasks....besides if fun

One more to purchase which is the Glock Gen 6 and I am done for a long time. There is only so many guns I can keep in the rotation. So, this year is the year to figure out what I really need and maybe get rid of a few. I did this to a few AR's I had and only have one now. Sold most of my Colt 1911's 2 years ago. Nothing right now makes me want to go out and get a new one. Maybe not having a real gun shop in town has changed my perspective. When I worked at LGS I usually purchased 2-3 a month. I used to go to shot show every year, now have no reason to go. Maybe I got over all the hype.

Theres a picture somewhere of a young Lt Norman Schwarzkopf in Vietnam with an ADVISOR Carbine, basically a M2 (full auto) in the folding paratrooper stock. The barrel cut back to the stock with just enough to reattach the front sight. I always wanted one of those. Think of is as a Magnum SMG
The collapsible stock development for the carbine is a great story.

I worked on a close protection detail on Schwarzkopf several times when he was CINCCENTCOM. Also shot sporting clays at the same club as he in Tampa. It was a privilege to know him. He was a force of nature, and scary smart. RIP Stormin Norman.

I bet u met Tommy Franks too he's a fantastic human and one of the most cerebral men I have ever met. I have a signed copy of his autobiography.

I did a CID detail for LTG Pagonis, Schwarzkopf's replacement in the Gulf. I met General Schwartzkopf several times, yes a Force of Nature is a good description

I had moved on from MacDill by the time Franks took over CENTCOM. I know agents who worked on Franks protection detail and they share your opinion of him.
I feel the military men and women don't get half the respect they should when it comes to education and being intelligent. People always assume they are dumb and had no choice but to enlist. Not only is that far from true but the one's that didn't have many options often are some of the most driven and educated people in the service. The amount of doctorates and degrees floating around are astounding. Much respect to em all.

His autobiography is pretty fantastic too. Them guys that came from Nam reminded me a lot of dick winters as far as intelligence and loyalty
