John Adams wrote that July 2nd would be celebrated across the continent with festivities and fireworks in perpetuity. But there were last minute details in the Declaration of Independence that had to be hammered out so the discussions went on for two more days. Thus it is July 4th.

The delay was due to the southern states' refusal to eliminate slavery by withholding their votes for independence until the "slavery clause" was removed. Benjamin Franklin spoke eloquently to his colleagues on the importance of gaining independence first, thus the removal of the "slavery clause", and the Declaration of Independence passed by unanimous vote on July 4th.
