M1A SOCOM 16

I inherited my dad’s SOCOM 16 and the new box of Remington 308 WIN will not chamber. My understanding is it would fire a 308 round. Is that not correct or is there another issue I’m missing?

I’m not certain, 🤔, but I believe a 7.62x51 will go on a .308 rifle, but a .308 round will not necessarily work in a 7.62 chambered rifle… or some such ?
But I bet somebody here knows…stay tuned.

308 and 7.62x51 (just like 223 and 5.56 are the same) they have the same external dimensions. Some military brass is thicker internally

Springfield makes M1As in 6.5 Creedmore. IF thats what you have, it would make sense that 308 doesnt chamber

Thanks for info. I’ll have to do some more research on it. He always said 308 but I was never around when he fired it.

Only the "Loaded" models have an offering in 6.5 Creedmoor.

Everything else is .308 Win / 7.62x51 NATO
Either of those should fit your Socom 16. Check your mags, ammo, and feed ramp/chamber. If it continues having issues seating a round fully, CALL Springfield customer service. Do not email, CALL. They will get you taken care of for sure.

Keep us posted!

If you are having issues, and cant figure it out, find a local reputable gunsmith to check it out.

While the M1A is typically known to be chambered in .308, historically, some have been produced in 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08 Remington, and .243 Winchester.

While the last two are derived from the .308 case there's a caliber diameter difference since the .308 case goes in 3/4 of the way before jamming, according to the OP.

Contact SA, and with the rifle's serial number they should be able to determine what it was "originally" chambered in.
