Magazine limitations - in the spring?

Hey. Just moved from CA to FL. Smartest thing I have ever done. I have an XD-9 Subcompact with a regular mag and an extended mag, both ten rounds. The longer magazine has no restrictor, internal bump, or other obvious design to limit it to ten rounds. I took apart the smaller 10-round magazine to check the follower and other parts. Only difference is the spring.

Wondering if the only difference is placing the shorter spring in the longer magazine. Other than the holes and round count in the mags, I see no issues. Installing the shorter spring in the longer mag was no big deal. Is this how to get 16 rounds? Or am I missing anything else?

I just don't want to buy a longer mag if I already have the parts here.
 
congrats on leaving Commiefornia, I did the same a few years ago and never looked back.
I thought of doing the same but ended up just getting new magazines and shipping my 10 rounders to friends behind enemy lines who could still use them.

gunmagwarehouse.com usually has good prices on Springfield magazines.
 
Welcome to the forum from Oregun. I'm an electrical engineer so I am nowhere near qualified to say anything short of buy new magazines. I did try shortening a mag spring once and it did not work.

By the way - Where in CA? I'm from Inglewood.

Save the 10 round mags. They might come in handy if you ever travel to one of the many anti gun states. Simply buy new mags to replace the 10 rounders for carry. I don't live in an magazine restricted stated, but even I keep 10 round mags for when I travel. Plus, I live in VA, which just went full blue. It's a matter of time before we turn into California.

Welcome to the forum! Thanks for joining us. I escaped CA just a few years ago. I still have several 10 round mags in my gear bag for my XD9 pistols. I continue to pick up standard capacity mags when I see them on sale. That's what I would suggest, rather than modifying a piece of gear that your life might depend on.

There are others, but these guys usually have pretty good prices, and you can find them cheaper on sale.


IIRC, the capacity is restricted by cuts/bends in the sheet metal of the mag to lessen the travel of the follower. Gimme a sec and I'll add a picture.

Left=standard capacity. Right=restricted capacity. That extra indentation is on both sides of the 10-round magazines.

Coming from the rebel Soviet block of Illinois. I don’t have the compact size XD but I have seen some of the magazines engineered (thank you CZ) to only take 10 rounders.
I’m on the fence about selling those magazines but at least keep them till you get some extra “regular” magazines.

When governor flintstone enacted his AR gun registration and magazine capacity restriction I bought 10 round mags from the Springfield store for my compact and tactical 9mm, they usually have some sale prices on mags.
I still use the 16 round mags for range use.

Out here in my county. The Sheriff wrote the governor saying that they wouldn’t enforce the ban (and the county I came from did the same thing). I barely go towards Chicago unless if I have too because it’s more restricted than the rest of the state. Also the Chicago area people come out my way because the laws are more relaxed. I know I’m not the only one that goes out of state to do business for accessories. Illinois has a Chicago problem and the more laws they pass the worse it gets all around.
