Mags keep dropping from Ronin 9mm

I have a Ronin 9mm 5inch and love it. Only issue is that while firing the mags will fall out. I have replaced the mag release once already and saw some improvement but it still happens. Any ideas on how to fix this? Anyone one else have this issue? Springfield has not responded. Pretty frustrated

you could be hitting the mag release button, as Jester stated, but also the mag release button's spring could be weak as well.

make sure your grip is not covering the button (it has happened to me a time or 2), if it still continues, you can buy stronger mag release springs.......

or S/A can send you a new one.

Yeah, as Jester said, it’s likely your grip - especially if it happens with multiple/different mags…
If you have “The Flinch” when firing (that last second jerk that causes a lotta people, like me, to hit low-left), then hitting the mag release might be imperceptible…

Thing is, despite our modern practices, a pistol isn’t technically designed for the now-common two handed grip. Thats a relatively recent development. Look at old Army training films or pics and you invariably see one-handed operation. Unless it’s a lefty shooting, the hand isn’t over the mag release.
Try a few one handed (right hand) shots. Or deliberately firing some unaimed shots using a low grip where you KNOW your hand isn’t over anything. That might narrow down the cause.

I can't really add anything to the discussion, grip, spring, thumb placement, etc. So I will just welcome you to the forum. Thanks for joining us. This is a great community.

I do have a couple of guns that have trouble with my thumbs if I'm not careful, the mag will drop or the slide won't lock back because of thumb placement. I don't carry one and have trained around the issue with the other.

Springfield does have good customer service but may be a little slow responding to email. A telephone call may be in order.

I have a Ronin Range Officer and it's one of my favs. Good luck with yours. I'm sure you'll get it sorted.

I have shot and carried 1911’s primary duty weapon for 30 plus years and never had this issue. I too thought maybe I was hitting the mag release so adjusted my grip to make certain and that was not it. I replaced the entire mag release spring and all. Still dropping. The Ronin is a proprietary mag. So you only get one choice in mag. Spouse carries a commander and we have about a dozen mags hers runs flawless. Scratching my head.

Any 1911 9mm mag will work in the Ronin, my RO Operator is a 9mm and I use Kimber TAC Pro 9mm mags in it, Ronin doesn’t have a proprietary magazine, now if it was a Springfield EMP, yes, those mags are proprietary mags

Read the article and Ayoob used a Wilson 10 round 9mm mags in his Ronin for testing

Scratching my head too. I have only one factory mag (no "gear up" special when I bought it). I also use 10 round CMC mags and a 9 round Mec-Gar in my Ronin without issue. I know you hate to hear it, but "it works for me".

Perhaps a trip to the mother ship is in order. Try giving them a call. Sorry you're experiencing this quirk. I'm sure you've done all you should. Thanks again for joining us and adding your experience.

Do you have the original grips on the gun? Original grip screws?
What kind of base plate is on your magazine, metal or polymer?

I ask because sometimes a magazine baseplate or grips or screws can interfere with a magazine fully seating.

If you look at the front edge of your magazine base plate there is a raised tab that seats into a notch at the front of the magwell if it is not seating all the way that might be your trouble.

I also have a 5" Ronin. I use Wilson, Ed Brown Tripp and Springfield mags.

A couple of things to check:
Many aftermarket magazine catches have a Wolff #2 spring which is two steps lighter then stock. I prefer the #1 Wolff spring myself. Maybe try a heavier spring.

And; is the magazine fully seated or is it possible it is hanging up just short of locking in?
