New Mexico

being summer there's ruidoso downs for horse racing (ruidoso downs as there is a ruidoso also). haven't checked too see if it was open due to the fire last summer (i think that was when it happened). in carrizozo they have billy the kid days which is about 20-25 minute drive from ruidoso i think. mascularo indian reservation has gambling, golf and a small lake + hotel. white sands missile range is just south of there about 40 minutes on the way to las cruses (about 130 miles from ruidoso). not sure about operating hours, but in raton (just south 10-15 minutes there's whittington ctr

I remember an Indian reservation with a fantastic mountain/rock formation called Shiprock. Coolest rock I remember seeing in a while (that was 20 years ago now). I seem to remember my distributor rep telling me the reservation could be sketchy after dark. And isn't the painted desert in NM? Taos if you're an art-geek (or skier in winter). Careful about carrying in NM, I remember its got some of the strictest gun laws in the country.

For food go to foodnetwork.com and look for DDD restaurants. You can't go wrong with ANYTHING on that list.

I don't know a lot of places in New Mexico but I have spent a good bit of time in Cloudcroft. They have a main street area with craft shops, several really good "cowboy cafes", and a really good craft beer pizza place. Look for Big Daddy's cafe and the Dusty Boots cafe. There is also a swanky hotel resort with a golf course. The people are very friendly. Nearby Alamagordo has a space museum and white sands. The highway from Cloudcroft to Alamogordo is very scenic.

i thought tularosa had the museum as you went in from ruidoso on 70, but then again it's been 30+ years since i've been toward there.
