This modernization program aims to procure up to 65,402 new rifles in two variants—Full Spectrum (FS) and General Service (GS)—by the late 2020s, featuring enhanced optics, improved modularity, and better suppressor integration.
Program Details and Scope
  • Manufacturer: The contract is awarded to Colt Canada, ensuring the new rifles are domestically produced.
  • Quantity: The project involves up to 65,402 weapons, with an initial order of 30,000 to be delivered starting in 2026-2027.
  • Goal: Replace the 35+ year-old C7 rifle and C8 carbine with a modern, modular system to enhance combat effectiveness and reliability.
  • Total Cost: The project is valued at roughly $370 million to over $1 billion for the full, two-phase program.
CMAR Variants and Capabilities
  • General Service (GS) Variant: Designed to provide reliable personal protection for the majority of personnel, including combat support and service support roles.
  • Full Spectrum (FS) Variant: Tailored for front-line infantry and combat units, optimized for urban and open-terrain offensive operations.
  • Technical Features: The CMAR is based on the Colt Canada MRR, which features a monolithic upper receiver (often designated C8A4), allowing for superior optics mounting, increased accuracy, and integrated suppressors, as discussed on The Armourers Bench.
  • Optics: The rifles will feature a new 1-6x Low Power Variable Optic (LPVO) produced by Colt Optics in Canada, as shown in this The Firearm Blog report.
Timeline and Procurement
  • Phase 1: Delivery of 30,000 GS rifles between 2026 and 2029.
  • Phase 2: Procurement of remaining GS and FS variants beginning around 2030.
  • Total Project Duration: Initial deliveries are set for 2026-2027, with final deliveries projected for 2032-2033, notes Canadian Army Today.

The Canadian Modular Assault Rifle (CMAR) program, set to replace the Canadian Armed Forces' C7 and C8 rifles with new systems from Colt Canada, utilizes a specialized, all-in-one combination flash hider/muzzle brake/flow-through suppressor, known as the Multi-Function Muzzle Device (MFMD).

Designed by Utah-based Strategic Sciences, the modular MFMD is billed as delivering in terms of sound (sub-140dB for all systems), flash (99 percent reduction), and recoil (60 percent faster follow-up shots) with a durability comparable to the barrel's life cycle.

MFMD Features & Performance:
  • Combination Unit: The MFMD functions as a flash hider, muzzle brake, and flow-through suppressor, acting as an integrated part of the weapon system.
  • Performance Metrics: The device is designed to provide a 60% faster follow-up shot capability through improved recoil management.
  • Signature Reduction: It offers a 99% reduction in flash and acts as a suppressor to bring sound levels to sub-140dB.
  • Durability: The unit is designed to have a service life comparable to the barrel itself.
  • Technology & Manufacturer: It is a 3D-printed, 100% Canadian-made system designed by Utah-based Strategic Sciences in collaboration with Canadian partners, aimed at reducing blast and signature exposure for soldiers.

The CMAR rifle itself, often referred to as the C8A4 in its early stages, is expected to begin delivery in 2026–2027, with the MFMD acting as the standard muzzle system for the new 5.56mm platform.
