Pellet Rifle Suggestions Needed

I need some suggestions on a pellet rifle, one of those suppressed or "whisper quiet" type. There is a real problem around here with dogs running loose. It is mostly from one irresponsible neighbor. 3 large dogs, and 1 medium sized dog. These dogs have killed other neighbors cats and chickens, and have attacked other dogs, including mine. I keep my German Shepherds enclosed around a 2 acre area in my backyard with a 6 and a half foot heavy gage wire game fence. But the dogs can still stick their heads or snouts through the wire and bite. I live out in the country, so there is no type of animal control officers around here. I've been told by county L.E. that I can kill those dogs in a self defense situation, or if those dogs are on my property, I could kill them if they were attacking my livestock (cattle, chickens, dogs, etc.). Not that long ago I had to fire a warning shot from my Governor to break up a fight between the fence with those dogs fighting my dogs. I don't want to have to kill a dog if I can avoid it. My idea is to shoot these dogs in the rump with a silent pellet gun from my front yard porch, before they even make it to my backyard fence. Give them a little muscle memory of pain from trotting on that old grumpy guy's yard, before my dogs even realize what is going on. Then they will learn to stay away. If I were seen by my neighbors that were affected by these dogs, they would turn their heads and not say a word about that grumpy old fart sitting on his front porch with a gun. They are sick of these dogs too. Any good ideas on a .22 pellet rifle good for about 50 yards?
 
we have an under 200 air rifle with a very quiet action.. for ground mole rats
wall world of all places, even came with a very decent scope that actually can be zeroed in
but for dogs... nope
paintball, or water hose
i have a stray cat that likes to hang out on my rain barrel, he does not tear up stuff, but i have to run him off, water hose gets his attention for a few days..

I don't have any experience with pellet guns but i do know they aren't harmless. They are often used for squirrel and other small game here in nj. So you may put more of a hurtin' on those dogs than you think. Have you thought of a paintball gun? Those will definitely leave a lasting impression on an wayward dog.

Most of the reviews I've read on some of these pellet guns people are complaining that they aren't powerful enough to kill rodents, like squirrels. I don't want to do paintball guns rifles because they are not silent enough, and then I would have to worry about re-charging nitrogen bottles. I need something that is quiet, so my dogs don't hear the shooting, and be good for about 50 yards. I don't plan to do any close-in shooting. And a water hose won't shoot out 50 yards.

mine us a cock to charge... no bottles and it shoots very effective to 100 feet easy easy easy and very silent ,, like pff

I have a Tractor Supply about 10 miles from me. They sell pellet rifles, and I just might go get one there. They sell the manual pump up kind there. I don't really want to have to deal with C02 cartridges and nitrogen bottles. And not have to pay a lot for something I probably won't use a lot.
 
You may be at risk of an animal cruelty charge shooting them with a pellet gun depending on where you are. My advice is call animal control and keep calling them till they do something and have your neighbors do the same. A few stiff fines might get their attention. I don't know where you are but you might also check into having your area designated a leash law area. There is nowhere that I know of that will put up with aggressive dogs running loose nowadays given the number of highly publicized attacks on people. . If you can't get it resolved through reporting to animal control try calling your local TV station. Be a gadfly if you need to. I hope you get this resolved peacefully.

I live out in the country, and we have no animal control here, as we are not a city or town. I have called the county before, and unless it is a person being attacked, it is up to the landowner to take action. County Sheriffs Deputies told me the law in Texas about landowners having to shoot dogs in Texas. Self defense for yourself or another is a given, on your property or not. But if on your own property, if dogs are causing property damage or killing livestock, they can be shot. Like I mentioned before, I don't want to kill any dog. But in self defense I will. And in defense of my dogs on my own property, I will if it is a last resort. A pellet gun at 50 yards is not going to kill a big dog. But it will teach them to stay away, and it might keep me from actually having to kill them if they continue what they do. The owner of these dogs has been approached about this by several neighbors. He does not care, and has done nothing to control his dogs.

I decent 22 pellet rifle will kill almost as well as a 22lr suppressed gun. if you don't want to kill then a 177 or BB gun of decent power is the way to go. This is a belt fed 22 caliber pellet gun, uses 3400 psi air. the belt is in the mag. holds 30 and is semi auto.

Understood, you gotta do what you gotta do.. I would still make sure reports of the nuisance dogs are on file at the S.O. in case the whole situation goes south

I have two Red Rider BB guns left over from when my adult son was a kid. When I was a kid, we used Red Rider BB guns for BB gun wars. They don't sting that much, and don't have much range. The reason I want a silent pellet rifle is so my dogs won't hear me shooting at the problem dogs. If they heard, then they would start barking, which would bring the troublesome dogs in even closer, making the situation worse. I think the next time I go to Tractor Supply, I'll just pick up one of their mid-price ones, between $100-$150.
 
our county as well, we finally have an animal control part of sheriffs department
but they wont come out for stray or nuisance
they also state same thing... if you are in danger.. you can dispatch it.
most of strays around here, just want a hug or some food we have such nice asssssshats from other places that drop them off or freaking leave their animals here after the weekend adventure

If you put a scope on it, make sure it is rated for air rifles. They are much harder on optics than centerfires are.
