Very COOL. I got charged on my first pig hunt. Thats when I really fell in love with hunting. While Wild Boar dont officially fall into the Dangerous Game category, they are close enuf' for me if youre on foot and close. Nothing without a rifle is dangerous in a tree stand at 100 meters.

Dangerous is measured in feet on the ground. Dangerous is when whatever is charging is faster than you. THATs what really makes the meal taste so good
 
My now dead ex-father-in-law had over 700 acres of land near Freer, TX. He would have us shoot all the hogs we could. Most of them were nasty. Terrible meat. All he asked of us was to make sure the carcass was not blocking the UTV trails, and to slit the stomach open. That would draw the buzzards and coyotes faster and clean up the mess quicker. Once in a great while, he would butcher out a young hog, but not very often. He just wanted them all dead. No matter how many we killed, there was always a lot more left. They are a huge problem for farmers and ranchers in South Texas.

I used to hunt regularly at a ranch in Eagle Pass Tx. He baited with corn from automatic feeders and had blinds set up. Whenever we got a kill he gutted them back at the ranch and buried the remains after butchering. He claimed that made them taste better since they were only eating corn.

My not so secret, secret is animal crackers. You eat one after first making the required animal sound then tossed a few out the blind for the pigs. The other trick was to dig a hole about 6" deep fill it with the cheap bag type breakfast cereal then pour in sour milk and make a trail of any berry flavor jello mix leading to the cereal bowl. That was like Hog cocaine. You should have seen the way they went for it

I always picked an archery blind to be closer to the bait, even though I was using a rifle. Most of the guys sat in rifle blinds 100m away. Some of the archery blinds were only 20 meters from the feeder. That was much cooler for me anyway
 
My ex-father-in-law had feeders with corn set up for deer. He didn't want any dead hogs near those, so anything we killed there had to be taken far away from the deer feeders. The smaller hogs were man-handled into the beds of the UTVs. No need for blinds. We just shot them from the UTVs. Huge hogs were dragged away with his ranch tractor. At one time he had a backhoe and would dig a trench to dump them in, but the backhoe was old and eventually broke down. That's when he let the buzzards and coyotes take care of the bodies.

A couple guys are wanting to add a "historic" flair and hunt with older weapons. One wants to use a M91/30 another a Post WW1 sporterized Mauser with double set triggers. Now Im thinking a Marting Henry in a Zulu War uniform with a gun bearer...

I'd use a 45-70 were it me. Or a 44 Mag with a 300gr bullet, or near that.

The Martini is 577/450 a 557 case necked to 45 cal. Its every bit the round of a 45-70 and for the guys using the M91s, 7.62x54R is certainly nothing to sneeze at, think 30-06 class

OH now I AM Jealous. I had a gunsmith building me a 500BPE on a Martini action but he sorta fadded away and I havent heard anything in four years

My grail gun is a double 4 bore but I wouldnt kick a 8 bore out of bed. I have a double 10 bore Paradox but 10 is down right puny next to a 4 bore

I might have posted before, that I had an opportunity to buy the Jurassic Park Lost World rifle. I passed because It was right before leaving for a safari and I really didnt have the disposable cash. That was maybe 15 years ago and I havent forgotten it. Im not sure if I wanted it more because it was really cool rifle or if it because it was a really cool movie rifle

Theres a myth that they are hard to kill. Im not sure thats anymore the case than a human. When you shoot them in the right place with even a modest round things fall down. Its the stopping the charge whether hit or not thats the issue.

Not every hunter will stand tall and face a charge without flinching, let alone without turning to run. These animals will hurt you, if you let them. I dont fault anyone who cant face the charge; but I do suggest they might want to consider pheasant hunting instead.

For me the thrill is the juice that draws me to the hunt
 
They have a very thick skull and hide. i wasn't hunting that day either. i will say i learned to not go in hog and bear country without at least a 20 round mag.

Yes they do but Im pretty confident any non expanding centerfire will penetrate the hide and likely break bones; which is not to say that 22 Hornet would be my preferred choice.

Im typically a Bigger is BETTER guy but I also recall the Taylor killed a butt load of Elephants with a 7mm/275 Rigby using non expanding rounds to defeat their honeycomb skull structure, an expanding bullet wouldnt have worked, neither a larger bullet without significantly more power

I’d pass on a single shot from the ground. Tree stand? Sure thing. On the deck? Nope. You fail to get a solid hit and quick kill you’re going to the hospital. Big difference between wild boar and feral pigs- and I wouldn’t do the single shot on a pig.. A big tusker WILL tear you up and a cut from a tusk is pretty much a guarantee of gangrene.
