Police Officer shoots dog

I just saw this incident. The short version is a City Officer was on a disorderly conduct call (someone was pistol whipped) and while on the property he was attacked. The Officer shot one dog after being bitten. The owner was also wounded in the leg while trying unsuccessfully control the dogs. The Officer gave first aid to the owner and called for EMS. The State Police are now investigating the shooting.

The story probably wouldnt have gone beyond the Crime Watch article; but the local Karens are in an up roar with stuff about how the Officer was trigger happy and he should have used pepper spray and the dog was just barking and and and. Zero consideration that the Officer was actually bitten OR that a VIOLENT crime had been reported at that location

I wasnt there so Im only making a few guesses but these are the facts being reported. FIRST it was in an "unpleasant" section of town. Second there were TWO dogs both German Sheppard types that broke through the porch enclosure to attack the Officer . Third The Officer was bitten at least 3 times.

I do know Pepper Spray isnt always effective on dogs. I also KNOW that once the Attack/Bite starts the time for less lethal is long past.

To be fair the shooting would be investigated no matter what, and it would depend on department policy. I know a couple depts around me that do not authorize chemical agents.
Yep. The PSP investigation is normal. I dont have a problem with that. Its the Karens that bother me, not one of them has a clue. They couldnt make it through the PD Academy, let alone one shift in a patrol car; but they all have an opinion. I wish theyd spend more time worrying about their husband's dinner

When did the KAREN thing start? Certainly it was before COVID because they were in full force by then. I once had a Male Karen chase me around a Walmart (yeah my mistake for being in Walmart) because I wasnt wearing a mask. Clearly its a social media thing as they all have their soapbox to screeeeech from. It was bad enuf' when they got on the Home Owners Board and decide to "police" the neighborhood grass length.

you know what "they say" about opinions.....

"opinions are like butt holes, everyone has one, and it usually stinks"

DOJ just released aim interesting and shockingly high numbers on LE bs Fog incidents.

A local LEO shot a dog (on camera of course) and was getting hate e mail and calls from PETA and everythjng else. I will say the video was bad and he sort of out himself there.

It’s also a great rwason why Ic can be your friend as there’s no good way to shoot a dog in most circumstances, yes sometimes it is necessary not saying it isn’t but not everythjng is a raging pit bull on a murder mission.

Here’s the FB Link and for those that don’t get FB pics of the DOJ report

Also disclaimer I am just sharing what DOJ said I am not arguing with anyone just sharing for informational purposes

Yep youre not wrong but Id ask exactly which dog you are willing to let bite you? Especially one that you dont know its history OR medical status.

I see this as just like the owners kid busting out of the house with a gun. and shouting "Im gonna kill you cop" F Him, DRT on the sidewalk, Im not waiting for him to shoot. In THIS case the dogs actually bit the Officer

BINGO!

Most dog shootings really bother me. This one seems legit. If you're actually attacked, then lethal force is justified.

Becuase of the nature of my job, I go into homes more than typical law enforcement officers. Many have pitbulls and a lot more than one pit. I went into a home once with 14 German Shepards. Never once have I ever felt the need to even consider lethal force let alone OC. Actually, going into the houses with dogs is my favorite part of the job.

Just like many cops are gun guys, I feel too many are afraid of dogs so they're already not in a great mindset.

I did have a situation where I was staked up inside a fenced in backyard wile serving a warrant and the someone in the house let 2 dogs out the back door. There was a moment of fear but I still never considered grabbing my firearm let alone my spray. Thankfully the dogs were friendly and everythign turned out fine.

We really had a situation in my county where a county Sherriff was at a house to serve paperwork in one of the towns in our county (in PA, that's pretty much all Sheriff's do. Server papers and pull guard duty at the court house.) A dog ran out of the house and towards the sherrif and he shot and killed the dog

According to authorities, a dog at the residence ran out of the house when the door opened and went toward the deputy, but the owner grabbed the dog and pulled it back. A second dog then ran out of the house and toward the deputy, and it was shot.

The worst part is, the person he was trying to serve no longer lived at the house

Like I said there are some legitimate dog shootings however the majority are probably not.

Sort of like those shootings uiu see that while technically legal (found objectively reasonable) use of deadly force there was a ton of “Officer Induced Jeopardy” where he/she did nothing but put themselves in that situation. It happens a lot more with dogs
My hat said we will see what happens with the 11th circuit ruling as it will no doubt force agencies to address how k9’s are handled

Glad I am retired didn’t have many dog issues or bad press back in the
Baton, mag light and gas days!

I understand not wanting to kill a dog. Most are protecting their owners. When an animal attacks an officer (or anyone else, for that matter) the attack needs to be stopped. It is just a dog. not a human.

Life goes on... until it doesn't.

AGREED. If your dealing with an arrest and a young kid comes out of the house with a gun say that he will kill you- thats an easy one. When a dog comes charging at you barking in the same situation, it might make you hesitate; but in the end its still an easy one
