While not a good situation, in truth the weapons were "in the home" vs. in his room:
Tactical-style rifles were mounted on walls and handguns were found unsecured throughout the home. In the boy’s room — in a heavy backpack beneath a turtle habitat — were AR-style magazines with writing on them referencing mass shootings, including the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado, according to a probable cause statement by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

So they had guns in the home and he had magazines in his room... with writings about other mass shootings

The worst part? His own parents either weren't paying attention or didn't care about his mental state:
Investigators said they also found “what appeared to be the face of a known mass shooter placed in a crude drawing,” and that in social media posts dating back to June he had displayed weapons and dressed in the attire of past school shooters. According to the probable cause statement, one post said, “when i turn 21 iam going to kill people,” and another said, “its over! my time is almost hear!”

Proven again with mom in court making excuses and the media calling out his being home-schooled (which here, probably means no schooling, just playing on social media):
The boy’s mother, who attended the court hearing, suggested in an interview afterward that the social media posts were an attempt to “be cool” among peers, KOMO-TV reported.

Cappetto said the boy was last enrolled in the Franklin Pierce School District in 2021. He was being homeschooled at the time of his arrest, according to the probable cause statement.

And finally, the real targets here:
“We are still conducting interviews, and it will ultimately be up to the prosecutor to decide if they will charge parents for improper storage and safekeeping of firearms or other crimes they feel is fitting,” she wrote in an email Tuesday.

Seriously, I'm in a quandary and have very mixed feelings. WE MUST PROTECT YOU CHILDREN! However we can NOT confiscate privet property of an entire household because of the writings and interest of a member of the household. Especially absent of a threat, and due process. On the other hand “when i turn 21 i am going to kill people,” and another said, “its over! my time is almost hear!” sure sounds like a treat to me. At that age or a bit younger I was very interested in Dillinger, Ma Baker, etc. yet somehow have managed to have never robbed a bank. I would like to say let the system take its course and kids will grow up. But I have lost faith in the system, and I don't see a lot of grownups anymore.

In the state of WA as well as other states, aren’t they required to be locked up? In my state, parents have liability here.
Don't know about WA (I would be surprise if they don't) but not in ME.
Required to be locked up just twists my tail. There are in MY house, MY barn, MY truck, etc. that should be "locked up enough". If you're not supposed to be there, stay to :censored: out and keep your paws off. Enough of mandating extra from me to deter people from being criminals. Locks just keep honest people honest.
