Q. best ammo for a PDW used as protection in hikes?

Magnum50

Master Class
Good morning, I have a Daniel Dfense M4 PDW .300 Blackout. Its main purpose is a truck gun that I also carry when I hike mountains and forest. Now I'm no hunter, never have but I was reading an article that said my current self-defense round, Hornady Black 110 gr V-max was too light to defend against an attacking bear or wild cat. That said What ammo is recommended for such a short barrel PDW? Would I want the heavier 135 FTX? But then I read that can jam in the short barrel.

Thanks in advance.

Mountain lion is a rather fragile critter, compared to bear. For the latter, you want penetration, deep penetration. Not having a.300, can’t say much about bullet selection. Just try to get the best for bear and it will work on lion..

So far as Lions go, I know of a couple of guides and outfits in Southern Arizona that are more than likely to use the 22wmr on them after treeing the cats. Ymmv.

When it comes to Black Bear, the .300 Blackout would best serve you with the heaviest bullet the cartridge/barrel will stabilize. In the PNW, we have Blackies that can get as heavy as 350, even 400lb boars. You can carry lighter 110-grain VMAX, bullets when your concerns run to encountering Puma.

Blessings.
