Range Report: 10 Yard Practice, 2/1/23

BassCliff

Professional
Hi,

It was a brisk 21° here in the upper Midwest as I made my way to the newer Fletcher Arms facility. I hadn't had enough caffeine yet today but we'll see how it goes. Wow, this white stuff is everywhere!

AMWts8DMEIWbisBrhtHz2Zy0K4I9g7orno27n6dMnpPJ-sUrcLGCqoN_Acx3vkiDcP2RFjKN1mHk1EzyM7YXNQ4VoWTPKtV91gk95SRHduJBNv0D7AVluxZxEwaSar_nLhN537sWAolcutAY3kVLpZ6ww8PiLA=w1236-h927-no

The range was about half full when I arrived but I was able to get my favorite lane, #7. I had brought a selection of targets for some variety. Plus, some targets I shoot better than others.

AMWts8Cv-rqj4oIC5T18UYiyv5CFzi9DqHpDiMqRVgXXcWYBodj822y4jjpHG8oPa_ICHWrUERiS3ZITB0PDlgx7jOb3APht4XbaBGhb2A_SEeHNyMyP9-6upGvlM62KS4BerDFf2soyPGZRtgQhMd5aU9FnQw=w1236-h927-no

I started by pasting on a few 4" reactive targets on my silhouette, sent it out to 10 yards, and loaded up fifty rounds for my XD9. We'll have fun with the Garrison a little later.

AMWts8AXYVWUW_YvNasJSnYUOu9J45jQmwvKS5vv7F9ruYe1gi5LfTlg9FbBp47BYuPf5jaeMQoAZCy7OEpts3SogcORj_83Iio-_BbBLktEmwmtEczdLhwnpcIpvh80SPuBN9Fv2DuGNJRp1lV4nUWz8BOiYQ=w1236-h927-no

I must say, sometimes the WWB is just crummy. I had a FTE on every other magazine. I shot this whole 100 round box. Then I shot a 50 round box of Fiocchi with no issues whatsoever. Hmmm. The Winchester flat nose .45ACP in the red box ran fine in the Garrison, no problems at all.

AMWts8A16uRRBwFJesBEjsuQ6z5ZuB26dSrppIE94m6rfEr-JTk9VFudllbDU8Jg4HKSq63o3toXlHvCNoBpuF1aP1gMA0_YWhc7QevaYb1lqkiK-DZttxqJSbfTjF5bF8RmlhIN3XtDgI-sYwKR4VOIYM0kpw=w1236-h927-no

I tried putting a magazine or two on each circle with the XD9. As you can see, very lackluster.

AMWts8B5EjxalQ09XswJ0GBslDkxD6ZsfyLUs033gwU1bAboMHnYFCR3h5f8QOTAbqVLH74ftWasjjrA923AzGkcJyr35KM0QV1bByDuPQqbsLwdKbJxV9ghLVQdsAxMeT-nX47cdcdwpcQBUdQt8LCxpa6VMg=w1236-h927-no

Then I shot some Fiocchi on these 1/3 size targets and did a little better.

AMWts8CsDkv7SRRVt1QHXW-MDdY47AIZ1CV7e8LNliiCV0K8vidOkHBeDRgU7D0LJFvN9fqLYzpajkDosI3LuYP_lENlU2grPje38e1rX8_dqwHwoxI2T0ETvkqMQ-Un9WW_segszmAqHa7wFCH6nfZGjWYsLA=w1236-h927-no

Then I tried my favorite B-8 with XD9 and Fiocchi. Six in the 10 ring with 2-X but two flyers in the 8 ring. Drat.

AMWts8ALkUvLV-0d5tFf0S-WXu7ovNva1pUeWQ2h59APGN8UF_enMKlzbvslJL6IWpSjMcbolxBpl11874RVDL6tLkQpIDkXpwR97ZtXbryLSU2brHsziGmbG2jwZSCWwujdsnNfVx0zfCDrItl0NlIon7jZmg=w1236-h927-no

After 150 rounds through the XD9 it was time to practice a little with the Garrison .45. I've been really trying to concentrate on that front sight and my grip so nothing moves as I pull the trigger. At least I'm keeping them all on the paper.

AMWts8BkhY5TWMSZo0mwtUOBM-GDcEA4dbh81RCu4L70y5PXHNP8Gk5I9xD-iUH9cPiBhkSsyejMAy3efdmNjjqlvO9sUobsaD4AxN9gyhVLxHF_1apVCV3ULxRx1kyLyJWVCfi8JjX9erwzfF5KDAhIFkxTXw=w1236-h927-no

It's going to take me a little more practice. I just ordered another 500 rounds of .45auto this evening.

AMWts8COhXFepXMADekM9wTAM7PSJte6-RDRaB8kquAprTbZcsEq-Xu1iAJuHI7eFho4K_hXGmAWA4a06S2vwxFfDXNfE4xj3-pyMXRnmDCAVOMRaIQx47MbT_bDW3ZU-__pMX5IHn-71sEALR8GuPB81actiw=w1236-h927-no

Then I put twenty hits on this 12x18 reactive silhouette. Again, at least they were all on the paper.

AMWts8DgBEilDPbaG2Q_mE2fhlwm06WxkdQuwM-_yXU56ImLfeBeNVBtTvc6kRya7P38sC643eBOCVTiz3R4dafT1IRtMynHXtjzGN8cyVuhbYGrol4x9AaP_C5gUzXMy-cWx1WuKsM64bbWa4Q9Qk8U3CEMFg=w1236-h927-no

I patched up this target so I could shoot some .22 at it. Look closely, you may see something missing.

AMWts8ALl3UoW8QyTsnW_0cQo7ywFC2sJBrAWhYhkbLhCsfhCK_fcJpPWs9DfssU4pb5mmlHhPq3dR2DqL6bovxXxF32E4DiRY9p5IMwA8mTTGjfqskg6F-kKXIDKZMog1qYMguR5OLeSPEmo_NXfXmwKOLw5A=w1236-h927-no

Did you guess? After putting six head shots on this silhouette I was wondering why I couldn't eject the spent cases. Doh!

AMWts8AIM2T3AL_qUOnLMD1OhNYJyjLQMO8z2ehV9RIF_NmYHuX5YFi8Qg2jM8NrkCenpx-bZqijFOMfj6Tl_LNsfm6fKAqoRpv5SszBZOU1hL86VVyZ0o4IJO5Nm7qwBcAcQ8GIC4B-KRetq4M7mQYJbQH7tw=w1236-h927-no

Thankfully the spring, rod, and screw were all in the case so I was able to reassemble it back to working order. The POA and POI on this gun are great, just don't let that hair trigger get away from you.

AMWts8DKUmBiJ9FMVCmRYmwb5SZ__W_v81x5zzaH2UGLD2qkxA8Hi8S8GPoVQMjIJLZeoCXNbOPOIovogoHzm6rKJhv4rMwroi7dRh2bNgCgCSVmUywu8kyPjPsasYK2dGh3UYWMcyozx3r5FmeTvO9SllfZcg=w1236-h927-no

Then I put four magazines on center mass with the P22. This little gun is fun to shoot fast. I'm looking forward to using this one to teach my granddaughters.

AMWts8BKfq1Cq7hUhkFaxkPBhLdg2LMwcHk3aEPUdg8oVmeWBdr2q9nLlUvwqT3f4BEdT82DfRMxIPFpQOqIomSnuaUQ4KbsYhLOfIuAq2Mwrr3w6asC7GcvBJjswcpYyt7hfSR_jx_Uv6_BNzdGiVLoDfDuZg=w1236-h927-no

Let's do one more round with the .22s. I slapped on an 8" reactive to repair the silhouette and tried to get a bead on it with the Rough Rider.

AMWts8CEdReg0AdA99UU7ie4I7O_4WuXmvdtJFezQxGAwoo5J15UuT2DSGnv-Jwr_AXhYuvHFUrNcFahbUcDflv53XNbu251VZcj3WbpPZzTfvWht2yFaEUm5-INCJ0T0wVBKrAMEofgPTkdoNaC0bk4s-IFVQ=w1236-h927-no

Then forty more rounds with the P22. YeeeHaaww!

OK, that's all the fun I'd planned for today. Now it's time to pack up and go down the hall to wash up. I really appreciate the D-Lead soap in this place. It's in all the restrooms and the hospitality area sink.

AMWts8BW1uWJvnAGaUZxjxtq-jOgJtIOza3RHyMIz7VSyGqdytKQquO43TRuhZw_uN6V4lZszGENSNvnp8biCOr3PaAYBhVcRnlOX5hJFSx4cdZGU11hbrKoyocfabmRu0AToDADjqY0w1_4AiPpvBD4myL6RA=w1236-h927-no

A week from Monday I'll be taking another one of their "cognitive skills" clinics. These are a lot of fun with lots of drills, targets, motion, mental stressors, etc. I'll have one more practice session before then, trying to accurately get my accuracy more accurate. I could swear I used to shoot better. I don't know if it's my aging eyes or if I'm just overthinking grip/stance/sight picture/trigger pull/etc. I'm going to try to relax a little and let the fundamentals happen naturally. Maybe something like "Zen and Shooting Fundamentals". :ROFLMAO:

Until next time, keep your powder dry and be thankful for your blessings.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

what the hell did you do to your thumb...??

forgot to move it before the hammer strike.?????

nice shooting by the way.........

but that thumb.......oh my achy breaky heart......:ROFLMAO:

Hi guys!

I really appreciate you all stopping by and offering your words of advice and encouragement.

Great stuff @BassCliff , with all the classes you take out there you should consider going to Gunsite Academy (if you haven't been already), I'll be there taking the 250 Pistol Class May 22-26.

Great idea of using the .22 to teach your Granddaughters to shoot, I think I might need to get one to teach my Grandsons when they get old enough, good excuse to buy that new Walther WMP .22 Magnum!

Keep up the good work, you're an inspiration to the rest of us to keep on working those skills.:)

Ha! At least I can serve as an example, a bad example. "Don't shoot like this guy!" :ROFLMAO:

Before I moved out of the area I was hoping to attend the Front Sight Academy, now owned by PrairieFire Nevada, in the greater Las Vegas area. But the timing didn't work out. The Gunsite Academy sounds great. I'd love to spend a few days in the Arizona desert about now. ;) There's only a few things I miss living here in the upper Midwest. The desert is one of them.

When I was a kid I started with a .22 and a 410. I wish I'd stayed in the sport. But, life. I've been thinking of picking up a .22 that's a little more full sized tactical. Well, let's say that I've added it to my list. ;)

Nice shooting as always. Yes, start them off right with the Walther. Walther is always the right answer ;)

You are too nice. I kind of stunk up the joint with my targets. But I know one of these days something will just 'click' and everything I've learned and practiced will really start falling into place. I have my moments. I just need to put more of them together. :)

I think my little P22 will be just the right size to get my granddaughters started. It should fit their little hands just right, maybe this summer.

Looks like fun even if you were not 100% happy with your performance. At least you have the resources and ability to go have some fun!

Sure! Even a bad day at the range [or insert your favorite activity here] is better than a good day at the office. :ROFLMAO: At least that's what I used to say before I retired. And it is a ton of fun, especially when I'm able to take my wife or daughter and son-in-law. I do take my self defense training seriously. But I still have fun with that too! :D

Oh yeah, my poor thumb. You guys have been looking at that for what seems like a couple of months now. Sorry. I really smashed it good, helping my son-in-law move furniture. You'll have to put up with it for a few more weeks until the old nail falls off. It's gonna get ugly. 😱

The next time I practice I'm really going to take my time. I'll shoot only three or five shot strings and then check the targets. When I shoot ten shot strings, or fill up my magazines all the way, I tend to hurry. I should always remember, "Aim small, miss small" and "Slow is smooth and smooth is fast".

It's great chatting with all you gents. Take care.

well then, good thing it was only your thumb you smashed and not something else........

then again, at our age, if "it falls off".........that'll be less for us to wash.....

Hi,

After this trip I was cleaning my entire little arsenal in preparation for my next practice day at the range.

1676328750441.png

I tightened all the screws on the Heritage .22 when I noticed one was missing. Egads! I don't know how long it's been gone. It was one of the "12.1" screws on the backstrap right behind the trigger guard.

1676328887934.png

I ordered the set of screws for the backstrap on Friday the 10th and they arrived on Monday the 13th. I'd say that's pretty good service.

1676328983510.png

Now all is right with the world. Plus, I got a sticker! I love stickers! :ROFLMAO:

I'm glad the parts got here so quickly. I didn't want to shoot the Heritage without all the screws in place. I'll even have a few extras.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
