Range Report: 45s Practice, 6/5/26

BassCliff

Ronin
How in the world are you?

Today I got in a quick trip to the closer range, the older facility. I brought my three main .45 pistols and 150 rounds of 230 grain ball ammo. I had a plan today and I stuck to it pretty closely. For each pistol I would shoot 20 rounds on target at 10 yards. Then with a fresh target, move out to 15 yards for 20 more rounds. The last 10 rounds would be at 10 yards doing target transition double-taps. Since I usually bring my own targets, I rarely choose one from the target wall.

Since I was using iron sights today, I had to swap the lens on my shooting glasses and use the "top focal" lens for my old eyes.

I had this section of the range all to myself. I thought for a minute about running a cold 10-10-10 drill but stuck to my original plan.

Ahh, here I am at my second office, ready to punch holes in my paperwork. You know it's my favorite lane.

Is this the second or third trip in a row for this trio? I'll have to check my records. Here's my XD45 Mod2 Tactical, Garrison .45, and Sig 1911X Freedom.

AP1GczNEeUxy-jnmW_UJJ9ptOSmxDssp8xQ4CBo1ptdwyIdrE32uJmql1WdPWz8VE8hsaIgDQvp_OvcMyByciKwKtEUlCec7wYDHxqR4xYNQXQpSILhDPwDMLbNgH0c2yy6wEjjMkXdmKvL8LPHhE3RXnmonYA=w1651-h929-s-no

I started with the XD45, 20 hits on a B-8 at 10 yards away.

AP1GczMSgepmbhzjzRedWK7lvZXKz62Z0qMmpBZaEYkxPZVkzS7rnayJcMHGnERB2KetPUrueheXnsMoEaRQTJZI9h2VCWEOLJq4_aco_WRr-V7de7pWuDO5BZUGNJVEqDWUlgrSBCddZs3Q4tQzpQl7_P_5RA=w1651-h929-s-no

Now you can't blame all that on the lousy trigger. I was rushing a little. But I do plan to install a new PRP trigger. Let's move the target out to 15 yards and punch 20 more holes in it.

Yeah, there's a bit more spread. Wow, I let one really fly. Sorry about that. Don't worry, I'll practice more. Then I noticed that the carrier line had broken. Oops. I guess I'll move over to lane #9, my second favorite.

AP1GczNQJdyEixlk4qu0d8FwSApgI3Fk0Rn2hCRQ77LTTdI2d4T0Mpvq3HR9vYsbgXNx7TaSsPB9e-7QjEJ1RKXiWV2rKq1zbA_plY3oqP5GVFjBGV1h5h5VbITfIDwZIS1uJhkB2IV_lJxBHp6Ll8y2Cmarrg=w1651-h929-s-no

I stuck on some small reactive bullseyes and a new B-8 center. I'll be putting double-taps on each target.

Um, yeah. Some of my double-taps were better than others. I guess I should settle another split second after target acquisition. Now we'll move on to the Garrison. Here's the first 20 rounds at 10 yards.

Yeah, that's a little rough. I should be able to get all of them in the black. Next time. During that string, I'll be danged if I didn't have a FTE. The casing got hung up and bent. That's the first time it's happened.

Let's take a little more time and try again at 15 yards.

Oof. I threw two way out that time. I guess I just have to practice more. For the Garrison's last target, here's the transition/double-tap scenario results.

I think those double-taps were better than the XD45, but neither is worth writing home about. OK, let's get a fresh target and try 20 rounds through the Sig 1911X at 10 yards.

Blast. I still let a couple get out of the black. Still, this 1911 feels real good. Let's try again at 15 yards.

I still let a few get out of the black but that's pretty good for me at this distance. I decided not to shoot the transition/double-tap scenario for my last target. I wanted to get a nice tight group on my favorite target. Here's the last 10 hits on the reactive silhouette.

Hi,

Nice cliff 🤠
Just be aware you are not actually training for a Street gun battle. Wanted you to be aware of that. PC says so.

I appreciate that. I am incorporating your grip advice, trying not to let my pinky and ring fingers pull the muzzle off, a little more support hand, etc. It's just not ingrained yet, especially for these pistols I don't shoot regularly. I know it's all supposed to be the same. I'm working toward consistency.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Hi guys,

Good to see you. :D

Good shooting Cliff. Enjoy your fish tonight!

We went to our local Mexican place for their fish fry. It's pretty dang good. Mrs. BassCliff is not a Friday fish fry fan, but she enjoyed her shrimp enchiladas.

Love flinging those fat slugs!

Yeah, me too. And I think I will enjoy the XD45 more once I upgrade the sights (Speed Sights) and drop a PRP trigger in it. Just another thing on my list. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

Hi,

@BassCliff

i ain't sure i understand this pic...

View attachment 112023

they open a door in lane 10........and you can shoot outside....at the cars parked in the parking lot....>??????

Ha! It's an optical delusion. ;) You're seeing a reflection of the front door behind me. If you zoom in on the fish eye mirror you can see this old noob taking the picture. But, yeah, it looks like you can shoot out the back door. But there's really no back door there.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Hi,

Another great workout Cliff. Next time you are working on your double taps be cognizant of properly locking your wrists. You’ll find the recoil much easier to control and your doubles will tighten up noticeably.

I appreciate that. I'll add "wrist lock" to my list. We do a lot of "cognitive overload" training here. People forget I'm just the bass player. :p

I'll use this same scenario again next time and try to improve speed and accuracy. I don't utilize target transitions as often as i should.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
