Range Report: Echelon 4.5F, XD9Mod.3 Optics Practice, 1/28/26

BassCliff

Hellcat
Greetings and Salutations,

This afternoon I was able to brave the cold and spend some time at my newer facility. Yeah, we've still got snow on the ground but it's been there three weeks. It just won't melt. Maybe because it was 7° when I drove to the range.

Remember last week (maybe the week before?), I showed you the target we were shooting for the raffle? This is the gun being given away at the end of the month.

I have a couple of .22 rifles but not a 10/22. This one will come with a suppressor and scope. Plus it will sport patriotic colors, just like @belladonna's new shotgun. :D Anyway... I procured my favorite lane #4 and got my kit ready.

Today I'm working with my optics pistols again, the XD9 Mod.3 w/Holosun HE507C-Grn-X2, and the Echelon 4.5F Comp w/Hex Wasp. Both were fed S&B 124 grain ball.

AP1GczOEYUSSeNN1ec17Y9f3h494lnxkhZSlSPn5Jk34-CFHqwuWie173ESTtwWM0MddHRIGwaHbPXjNm_kQLpR6xxEOgjhp_PMZfkWZEmYupReYWgWb8dD7f3RhANL2HpC8Ward6DDpTzGIMTM__W7p9700kQ=w1651-h929-s-no

Most of the session used a target 10 yards away.

AP1GczMLb13sb_aBVDgrJWGz7wUS_OeoctGEWt2UDYeVgDstv6bbZvZ5HIVwaBt4bBy4U8-q7kFPq7COorpCn5Zhsxbnhip5tJIyFew-KV6-_wmdmkXa4IegaArvFLEWhCN5V2BIgrO7DKb1pCzzHBnmage20g=w1651-h929-s-no

I started with the Echelon. I was trying to ensure the red dot was zeroed properly so I used my backpack as a rest. That with a chair worked pretty well. The first five shots came back like this.

AP1GczMMJ9JInD5y5t-ZmSgcTQKtsRyfAxeOXkDOQfNfsVbh0b4oWMdmpswjeCLm1qngbEmJ6CdkulDyeenjYGaCLc3h0KLdP43wuqqrQqR17PR8rXhA64_3gIHo-x5i1waeY3ciyK6ktaj-SW4wOae91EZJ7A=w1651-h929-s-no

It's a little high and left. I thought, let me try that again before I make any adjustments. I put five more hits on the B-8 and it came back like this.

AP1GczMY5NvgZ-VqAiQnF9wQk_wbUwGEecVEjC5BrvNWupEXLUYCHC7978Y_fLeEYzf9eHGM7iZ_SHiT91GYhUa2qKZ8NJ_hWQkljIN-DqdkL1yOO2XdaD4U_yrJYz_uGWHUEAZ3_dFMaPtri7vyT-gyw9c2pw=w1651-h929-s-no

OK, it's a pretty tight group but I'm going to make some minor adjustments. I taped on a B-8 center and tried five more shots.

AP1GczMiAV9-uNMk1nVBU5hv2oOOlVZR59L-GO6U-3nMkdv8gcwlsvBZ0z1oZsW-_bUMqO-G3apxpTir_S5aW5jUT4tmRndMzfpUZznOhNG-cJb0mkgaoC4cEGOFBuV6lE7mxGEWwBw4EcOujJQ_WYM8nHZs5Q=w1651-h929-s-no

The group is a little wider, probably just me, but it seems centered. I'll put five more hits on this target to see if I'm consistent.

AP1GczOI6eF--pN6rp3nAnF9f8ZpmyZLjtNcC0I3ZUgN_vGyjqC-3UxR4tBhezUsqJPMYO_xSUItUW_RJq0hwHhOyY-15RFZsZZvpqDUMUNTRcA7OokW_VKhyOP8__RON3CbCg7tTjKt7GL17UOr1FRJA3MZNA=w1651-h929-s-no

Drat. Except for that high/left flyer, the rest were in the 10 ring. I'm going to work with that for a while as I try to remember my fundamentals. Now I'll put away my "rest" and try a regular two-hand string of 10 shots.

AP1GczM_6u6pbKD9che4SaleNs168a6j80ZxZUBowchcBIhSTEyLUKFbdXqVSZwt1byvR4CiBLrWkOiPiqzsUa70nmrnsP7SsapC8CH_s3jbnp72DvAPBH6MKwNusgepYaWssF_Ilo1jh1Qh4LlaFkzgeQo1yg=w1651-h929-s-no

This single red dot is not my favorite sighting system. But that's not too bad, considering who's shooting. Let's do the same thing for target #4.

AP1GczPP0-Etv1GNb2ORjfSA6YZDYEwztgkN_0-Voa_CJGxnjACzqiQcFAZvy5JJLQ6iQ4e0uPSDZnOW1-RIdFsi7UYW2oHFsCC7Jc7yGvzAFlyKY8cqKjXVz8UCr2SuPNVEvz9g7k0e9GrypZshZrg8r8QwEg=w1651-h929-s-no

That's a little better. I'm still not thrilled with this Hex Wasp. Maybe I'll shoot better once I put a better optic on this pistol. Yeah, right. For target #5 I used an 8" reactive circle. Sometimes I shoot the reactive targets better.

AP1GczONF429yYAztp6rYOlh6ebaZT-mupujag-1h0ykurTGmQd3elz1cCeq8Ajo5N86Q-2faw-ZUB46XVAx0S_h_uGCsbAbCRzstOFTG7evBeIPDW4cB8XqtlMHKMDK1Ium_oT6o7J6pX0fvZPy3L3nKmrNLg=w1651-h929-s-no

Well, one bad low flyer and the rest somewhat mediocre. But I think those 10 hits are gradually getting closer together. I'm going to patch up this target and put twenty rounds on it. Let's hope for a big ragged hole.

AP1GczNYK2SpoUtmzC2hBuxEb_XwvGfRZ5adQ-qLLL3Fp6vXjH8n7CxnrvOl6-cHydvMhKS-CiX_iMVpSdL1fLk3_v32UwJRhDRz1m_DrPfF6KisOoLC5A1xy5vUYiPITMq_W8ldnUVxEOwghqmA9mhX4V3CSw=w1651-h929-s-no

Twenty hits later there's the beginning of a ragged hole, with three hits off the target. Drat. Let me take a breath and try another target with 20 hits. Here's #7.

AP1GczMDC2SuGf50E8Mr8pB-0oSKMuUuuUsSEz0-aRop_6vYXwgwHO4VDxKzR9izGX8qz4F6D4kixi0d7HU43u4JD7cVNbCFBsRWId939cybaS_k7PkZajERVunWt_vvGIAU3gQkE_nPPt7B9bPoVYifbUbtYg=w1651-h929-s-no

That's a little better. I can't blame it all on the red dot. It's my lousy trigger press too, pulling the muzzle off target. I'm hoping as this trigger wears in I'll be able to manipulate it better. For my last 10 rounds with the Echelon I'm going to try one of the pre-programmed scenarios. I'll use the 5x3 at 10 yards.

AP1GczO17dLFyEwiZljIbxhczsR4NRd1VuJdbbsHvOOUbIo2tL5sZQaOAs_WtHE1EqyCtYIi35mR5YQH5w2oBDJdMNUeMagVj3H7ZujpJvnM7Yd1HhMgsztFctNXEZgzGBGdkzj4lnIRQXtpklTLZAmtT3PSPA=w1651-h929-s-no

I did take video of this scenario but it didn't turn out too well. I'll just show you the target.

AP1GczNo4kIFhHJ5lukvriB8Wa1Q_pIh3p8X8X2PZSPfLfVE2V5mU-OxSH2UDS4LjimZgmU15cdeVPp23X-tykbkjnR0V4ANQmojyH94B1JFfqCnLB-rhJ6dWIMeHXgfPNfw5LIw4a_TgJRyi1GRR8DyYeHuBw=w1651-h929-s-no

Coming up from low ready, I was taking too much time finding the dot. I was putting two hits on the target each time it faced me. Half of them were really rushed. I'm going to practice this some more but I'm definitely getting a better optic.

This was my last Echelon target, 100 rounds total. I've got 50 rounds to put through the Mod.3 in the next post. I hope you don't mind all the pictures. They won't fit in one post. I'll be right back.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Hi! I'm back!

Now we'll proceed with the Mod.3 portion of our exercise. I used a small silhouette with a 3x5 card taped in the high center chest. Let' see if I can put all 10 hits on the card.

AP1GczN-yeqEDSy1tKT7HCakC9GL9wrwtb10-yH5HiJg1MV5JhqjN6dyipJ8UtdY_FAo8jXnRO6K7I2Guq8vor7m_9zDqgcxjD678x4v5XC2exMI-9M13Zy4nOXPFhzwK9gS97XISZb43i9r_Un7V3hOrIZZHQ=w1651-h929-s-no

Drat and bother! Just one hit got off the card. Still, not too bad for me, so I'm going to speed up a little on this next card.

AP1GczPOwXkwfTVMnQx9OMn2KVbZZ4CgW9OvGSQ4z4Eibk9F_OQaqQWjTDyHi0I8IIAAM9fsCsQnLLi4xh42nmlI1mMS-ahuRL2m5goj7vC5pCItS8AGx-kcCjWqXFsbkNI5UJpYlssMyEnyw6LQSyJN0gbcmg=w1651-h929-s-no

Yep, you can tell I'm shooting faster. I let a few off the card this time. Next I'll try a reactive "aim small, miss small" target.

AP1GczPJKIH19_b936oEW9_BPSI_5vJPpVT9RK8Wi4LXS-kPrgzXEhiXBYQ4FEkrsc2O2U9crC3soo6cQItc0SEngDe0z01TOhcHjEPepEfN6mQoYETy_r0WASHWIuowdAwNqqfxRONfIP5m7VfvfKZm2zjeDw=w1651-h929-s-no

Bah. Just mediocre. Six hits on the 4" circle and four hits in the perimeter. I think I can do better. Here's target #4.

AP1GczM3-ugmLqky78ocltmv2ufvbSB0jT6BF6j30Y309-tXWkQmUVKsLuYP_LgSAbL3iTuG0Z7FLCD2T7JO-j55fWupehA3V1cGNgIqNGN-yvWJ3btvfRmHAcATyQ4hdq2ID-yYBy4BQO-shVFGRn5PFG22xA=w1651-h929-s-no

Not bad, I guess. Nine hits on the target, and the one miss was still on the 3x5 card. Does that count? ;) Hmm, I think there's five hits in that big hole on the right. :) What the heck, here's a closer look.

AP1GczMbRm6VnCNYTpyvhPm8QpofNvq-s0qgSy8qmEfMwf3CHKzNB-SS4CRDHk44QO6a_lBP41XPe6Oez-1vnXP63_pJNZb_o6Lvt3nCVTyHUCG34_KeGuzy5w7fkjLZBQFDP2tVHozjmYmPnZivUt6e1A_D3w=w1651-h929-s-no

OK, my last 10 rounds with the Mod.3. I took video of the scenario drill at 7 yards.

The fist shot was way low. The rest were closer. Here's a still of the final target.

AP1GczMxhG4ph-zYsub2usXOUgKzRDd7-VnUEkfNzn78_NJlya1P3dCorgKdfFdGwRlKcxC-qTlGJXqCQCeDuXM5G9BEn6OFbHERheiq9sSM2g7nxBMQkrrBVVAuD0kG7e3PPrGuq2h8Jzp0uerHNY_gT5RJcg=w1651-h929-s-no

I had one more loose bullet rattling around my case, leftover from a previous range trip. I decided to try one hit at 15 yards.

I told myself, "I'm going to put this halfway between a head shot and the center mass bullseye." Sort of a high center chest shot. It came back like this.

AP1GczOMhPJtBhhA56PUZu-Xx7wZWt8QoxKumLsXItCa5rwfq9KXo67owmID_A6VFV8mwuLgl7cXsmq97tiUIn-C9Q5pG6dLsXmH1aQdr4wR0nrRMN_EeCW_OEhnYWIQdNRbUNDY9KKO4KwrV0-elijIQ2alRg=w1651-h929-s-no

Success! I'm really liking this Mod.3 and Holosun 507C. I'm leaning heavily toward getting the same thing for the Echelon. I haven't quite made up my mind.

Well, even though I have targets and ammo left, I gotta call it quits. I cleaned up my mess and remembered that I haven't tried these fancy "tumble on impact" bullets yet. Maybe next time.

Nice! But I really hope you get rid of that Hex soon. Get the Holosun. It just makes sense that if you run more than one dot optic on your pistols, than all should be the same. That way they all present themselves the same to you, and you don't have to worry about transitioning from one type of optic to another. Just my opinion, though. You do what you think is correct for you. And just to derail this thread, is a .22 good for an EDC? lol

Enjoy your range reports Cliff, good shooting.

Hi guys,

Very good shootin agent. You have a really nice range there. i also learned something new. you secret agents are multi talented.

Thanks. Yes, I can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Well done, sir! A gunhand I would ride the river with!

I appreciate that. :)(y) That's quite a compliment.

Enjoy your range reports Cliff, good shooting.

Thank you. I hope all is well with you and yours.

Thank you. Ya know, it makes perfect sense to have the same optic on both (all?) my OSP handguns. The Holosun on my Mod.3 works well and is easy for these old eye to see. I'll probably put the exact same one on the Echelon.

A .22 is better than nothing. ;)

Hi,

Great report as always, Cliff. I think you did fine…we are all our own hardest critics. I’m getting to the point now where I can tell what I did wrong the second that trigger is fully pressed. And I too have a tendency to rush. Keep up the good work my friend. 😊

You are very kind. I'm also getting better at figuring out what I did wrong. One of these days I'll fix it before it happens. :p I'm always looking for that balance of speed and accuracy.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Good shooting! There's nothing to be worried about in my eyes. You're shooting a nice group at 30 feet which is well within defensive parameters. FBI defensive standards are between 3 to 7 yards, I usually train within those distances out to 10 yards. I'll run a few Hail Mary shots out to 25 yards just to see if I can hit the target if I had to but I normally stay around 7 to 10 yards.

Thanks. Yes, I can walk and chew gum at the same time.
Maybe but you are a real good singer and you almost made my day today. My wife heard you singin and immediatly fell in love and got all squishy. i said don't it make you feel romantic. he's like bing crosby and Elvis all in one. she said yes and took off her pants. well at our age i said ok, i'm goin to the gun shop. i don't know what happened while i was gone but she was asleep.

I appreciate the encouragement and feedback. Yes, my main goal is "combat accuracy" rather than competition bullseye shooting. Although sometimes I do like to slow down and do my best, my focus is self-defense and stopping the threat.

And as for @Belt Fed, you can never speak of such things again. 😲 🙈 🫣
