Replaced my carry ammo today

I carry Hornady 220 grain Critical Duty in my daily carry. I replace my carry ammo twice per year but I'm a couple months late this cycle. I usually buy two, 20 round boxes. This is great ammo, and I know it works after kiĺling some feral hogs with it. I prefer using my 10mm on hogs in the traps but this stuff works just fine in a pinch. But dang it has got pricey at $30 per box of 20. But quality is never cheap.

There are people that still shoot WW2 era ammo and it always goes bang. Even more people shooting Vietnam era ammo and it always goes bang. I personally am loading match ammo with 1972 vintage primers and always goes bang. Why change carry ammo twice a year? Seriously!?!

This is one of those crazy conspiracy theories that makes the ammo companies erect. Ammo doesnt go bad in 6 months or 6 years or 60 years. Your grandchildren will have grandchildren that shoots your refuse.

I thought you switched to some 210gr. option or 185gr. or 230gr. or whatever other replacement. You rotated it, which does also replace it, but with more of the same not a new replacement choice. A tiny particle in the overall total of my confusion has cleared.

Think it depends on what “change” means. I try to shoot a magazine or two of my carry ammo about once a quarter…so I kind of retain the “feel” of the round upon firing, make sure my sights are on with it, and ensure my gun continues to have no hiccups with it. After I shoot those couple of magazines, that were my carry magazines, I load new rounds into the carry magazines. Always has, and will continue to, seem prudent “to me”. So, in effect, I “change” my carry ammo four times a year.

I personally don’t get folks that never practice with their carry ammo…

I only change duty ammo when I have to. For off-duty guns that are only carried randomly or I have to purchase myself, I never swap it out. 10mm, .357 mag, .40 are pricey.

If you read the ammo makers info, they pretty much universally say, "store in a cool dry place." If you are in LE working in say, Vegas, your ammo is riding in 115 degree weather sometimes, sometimes it will be in rain showers, sometimes in a gun box in the trunk at 145 degrees if you're doing an interview at a prison or jail and have to leave the gun in your vehicle. Also, if you're going to qualify or train, you'll unload your duty ammo from gun and mags and then load it back up after quals. Some calibers are prone to bullet setback if rechambered. Same theory if you're a patrol officer working in a cold state -rain, snow, back in the car to be warmed up after being outdoors. In and out of the car and buildings 20-30 times per day. All winter long.

My personal process was to replace carry ammo every 6 months before I retired (again.) Now it's once per year. Carried ammo is a lot different than ammo sitting in even a WW2 bunker in a cool dry bunker. To deal with the bullet set-back issue, I had a sharpie and would make a line across the case head for the round coming out of the chamber, that way it would only be chambered a maximum of twice before being fired.

I shoot mine whenever I'm shooting my EDC gun at the range .... Mostly because I'm too lazy to change the bullets to FMJ

Mines kinda cheap though, only $50+tax for a box of 50. Speer LE 9mm 124+p or 147 grain ammo. Have some Speer 115 grain PD ammo
Did have someone tell me it's too expensive, but they were paying almost $25 a box for 20 rounds. Guess they were using the congressional math process

Although I carry a snubby 38, I change my ammo twice a year when the time changes for the exact same reasons.

That carry ammo then goes into a 5 gallon bucket for the next range trip.

If and when I get back to the range will be shooting year old carry ammo replacing it with fresh new.

While attending a gunsmithing course in Louisiana a local PD Detective brought in his S&W model 36 complaining he couldn't eject rounds from the cylinder. He said he routinely sprayed WD40 on the loaded revolver. We removed the cylinder and had to use a wooden dowel to remove the green corroded rounds. Thank goodness he never had to actually fire it.
