Review: Springfield XD Mod.4 OSP 9mm

Would've been nice if the author explained the differences between mods.
From the comparisons I've been able to do on the Springfield website, it appears that the only difference is the profile of the slide. That's it. And whomever was doing the website profile for the Mod 4, literally just copied the Mod 3 page and changed most pictures and a few descriptions. But I haven't yet seen any difference between them, other than the slide profile.

Noticed that too, word for word, outside of slightly different slide appearance.

Guess Mod.3 popularity made them think they could rename it and increase the msrp back up a little?

Did anyone see or hear anything about the Mod 4 at Shot Show this year? I spent some time at their booth and don't remember seeing anything on it. The articles that have come out are all from the last few days. It looks like the gun was just put out there and the Mod 3 discontinued with little to no announcement beforehand. Makes me curious as to why.

I'll admit, I could have missed it at Shot, there was a lot of things looked at that week. And yest, just because I didn't see an announcement, doesn't mean it didn't happen. It just seems odd that they would release the Mod 4 so suddenly, discontinue the Mod 3 simultaneously, and then only have the modest of observable changes between them.

My speculation is that, seeing as they're made in Croatia, it's probably easier with less questions to release a new model number with a new higher price than to charge more for an existing model.

Hi,

I have the original XD9 4" Service pistol. The improvements over the "Mod.1" were compelling enough for me to buy a Mod.3. The improvements of the Mod.4 over the Mod.3, not so much. But the Mod.4 is definitely worth looking into if you'd like to upgrade from the original XD9 4" Service pistol, or perhaps even a Mod.2.

I can't find it right now but I did read a review article that said the improved trigger was the flat "META" style, as used in the XD-M Elite pistols. I do like the Mod.3 trigger better than the original. I assume the Mod.4 uses the same trigger as the Mod.3. One article measured the trigger weight at 3.8 lbs on the Mod.3. That seems a little light but to me it feels less than 5 lbs.

I can only speculate that the increased MSRP is due to higher labor and/or materials costs. Maybe our friends in Croatia wanted to cut a new deal. Still, I think it's quite the bargain considering the feature set, lots of bang for your buck. Please bear in mind that I'm not a professional, just a fan boy, sharing my thoughts and opinions.

Since I have a Mod.3, I won't be buying the Mod.4 but this is interesting. Even though I already own the Echelon 4.5F Comp, I saw this model pop up in an email from a vendor.

That's a 5.2" threaded barrel on the Echelon, with Tritium sights. Funny though, I can't find this model on the Springfield website. I hope I can save up enough gig money before they're gone. The Mod.3 disappeared so quickly. I like big barrels and I cannot lie. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

I have the Mod.3 nut have no comments on it as I have yet to shoot it. The only mod to it is the addition of a Holosun 407k-gr 6moa dot. I haven't sighted it in yet.

The mod.4 looks good. I like the deeper serrations and flat faced trigger from the factory. I will probably update the trigger in my Mod.3 soon.

Thanks for the article!

I don't see it on the SA website either but sometimes some models just pop-up for a short time fir odd reasons. Here is a link to it on Grab-a-Gun, not a bad price I guess and it shows the SA part number ... If you are looking for 1. They will disappear pretty quick.

The mod 3 already comes with a flat face trigger from the factory.

Other than a very slight difference in slide look the features are the same.

Pictures of the Steel Sight, the grip, and flat trigger, (and the light mounted on the rail, in the exact same spot) are exactly identical.

If anything, it almost seems like the XD Mod.4 is going back to the Mod.2 serration style.

AI tells me: (so like Glock, a few small steps closer to PERFECTION 😂)

The Springfield Armory
XD Mod.4 OSP is an evolution of the XD Mod.3, primarily distinguished by more aggressive slide serrations and refined ergonomic features. While both are optics-ready, budget-friendly pistols based on the original XD architecture, the Mod.4 (introduced in 2026) updates the third-generation design (released in 2024) to better meet modern shooter expectations.
American Rifleman +1

Key Differences
The primary improvements from the Mod.3 to the Mod.4 focus on tactile control and accessory flexibility:
  • Slide Serrations: The most noticeable update is the improved slide serrations on the Mod.4, which are deeper and more aggressive than those on the Mod.3. While the Mod.3 already featured extended serrations across most of the slide, the Mod.4's deeper cuts are designed to provide a more reliable grip in adverse conditions.
  • Accessory Rail: The Mod.4 features an updated dustcover accessory rail with three slots. This is an increase over previous configurations, allowing for more precise positioning and flexibility when mounting weapon lights or lasers to improve ergonomic activation.
  • Trigger Design: While both models use a flat-face trigger—a departure from the curved triggers of original XD models—the Mod.4 features an updated version of Springfield’s Ultra Safety Assurance (USA) trigger intended to address feedback regarding "clunky" triggers on the Mod.3.
  • MSRP: The XD Mod.4 OSP has a slightly higher MSRP of $399, compared to the Mod.3's introductory MSRP of $325.
Shared Features
Despite these refinements, the Mod.4 retains the core platform of the Mod.3:
  • Optics Readiness: Both pistols are optics-ready using Springfield’s OSP (Optical Sight Pistol) system, which utilizes adapter plates to mount various red-dot sights.
  • Safety Suite: Both generations include a passive grip safety, a tactile loaded-chamber indicator, and a striker-status indicator.
  • Dimensions: They share nearly identical physical specs, featuring a 4-inch hammer-forged barrel, an overall length of 7.3 inches, and a weight of approximately 27 ounces.
  • Magazine Compatibility: Both models use standard XD-pattern 16-round stainless steel magazines.

Had to take picture of summary to make it show up correctly…

AI seems pretty useless, since we can read all that and also realize the slide serration is the only difference.

It also seems to be comparing the XD Mod.4 to the Mod.2 and not the Mod.3 especially since the rails on both models are 3-slot.
