The gas tube would need to match the gas system length of the current barrel or the bolt would not operate at all because of added or lack of length of the gas tube. Each barrel has its own gas length predetermined by the placement of the gas port hole in the barrel which also needs to correspond to the appropriate gas tube length for the bcg to operate as the tube sits inside the gas key of the bcg when its locked into the barrel extension.

Here's a picture of different gas tube lengths for comparison.
Right, so the length of the gas system determines or rather is dependent on having the proper buffer weight, spring and tube length which can all be manipulated along with the gas block, if adjustable, to insure the gun runs correctly, right ? And the BCG can be thrown into the mix as well.

Agreed!

It can be confusing but it's not that complicated because of the formulas of part combos readily available online for builds.

Out of spec, loose, or broken parts can also be an issue for those that don't have the experience to diagnose an issue. A loose or misaligned gas key on a poorly staked or assembled BCG can cause major cycling problems if not noticed by the end user.

Let alone a mis-sized gas port on either the barrel or block...not an uncommon issue on "bargain" parts.

Now, throw a can on that will increase pressure and change all the variables.
