I find myself in a similar situation. I have only found one or two ranges nearby that will allow "tactical" style shooting of shotguns (aka shooting at static targets). I live a very short drive from a number of skeet / trap / sporting clays setups that are open to the public. None of them allow one to bring their own targets or target thrower, you have to pay the "per-target" price for every clay tossed from THEIR equipment, which is rather pricey. I do just enough practice to be able to hit an occasional thrown target.

As you note, it depends: It'll be 7000 divided by whatever your charge weight then times the 10 lbs. For 12 gauge, assuming a 30 grain charge (That's probably a bit low), 10 lbs will get you about 2300 rounds. For most loads for handgun rounds, the charge weight is considerably lower, so you'd probably get well over 5000 loads from the 10 lbs. Being forced to rely upon a fixed, limited supply of stockpiled powder is one reason I will NOT give any more of my money to Alliant for the present time. They must first re-prove their renewed commitment to the commercial retail market over the long term before that will happen.how far will ~10# of blue dot get someone. for me somewhere in the neighborhood of 6,500-7,000 rounds depending on which cartridge (pistol)?
Powder usage rate is one of the "negative" aspects of shotshell reloading that I've discovered. Most of the shotshell recipes I've collected "share" powders with my handgun reloads, except a single shotshell load will gobble up maybe twice, maybe two-and-a-half times more of a given powder per load.I know, i was stating how little imr powders are available as those are difficult to find. On a good note I have a good amount of blue dot, but don't use it for sg so it should last me fir nany thousands of rounds
One powder that is good for target shotshell loads that is not widely "shared" right now is Hodgdon's Titewad (aka Accurate Nitro 100 NF). I am certain that this powder is suitable for handgun reloading also (think Alliant Bullseye substitute), but not much data has been published (yet). Hodgdon has put out a small amount of data for Titewad in handgun loads, but not for all cartridges.
The truth is that almost any powder that is suitable for shotshell reloading is also suitable for handgun reloads. It's just a matter of finding reliable reloading data in either scenario.
