Springfield Prodigy 5" slide not locking back?

Hi,

Does anyone here has a issue with 5" Prodigy pistol slide not locking back after shooting the last round?

Welcome to the forum from the Wild Wild Upper Midwest. The Prodigy is a fine pistol. Sorry it's giving you issues. Heres a couple of thoughts just to get the thread started.

Does it fail to lock back with all your magazines? Or just one or two? I have a couple different Springfield pistols that will fail to lock back, but it's operator error. My fat thumb will sometimes cover the slide release and not allow the slide to lock back.

I'm sure someone smarter and better looking than I will be along soon to offer more suggestions. ;) The Springfield customer service is usually top notch. You could give them a call as well. It might be covered by warranty. Thanks for joining this daffy community.

Thank you for your indulgence,

So that is the scrip they gave you for this. I think I was left out of that training.

I run a very thumbs high grip and I do not own a single gun that locks back because of that. There is not a gun that I can’t get to not lock back. In all likelihood you are inducing this. The best way to test this is to fire the gun with your left hand (assuming that you are right handed). If it locks back - guess what? It’s you. If that does not make a difference then it very well could be your mag(s) follower or springs (give them a good clean and spray them with a dry lube - do not leave them wet. If that doesn’t make a difference have a look at the slide release lever and spring. And if that doesn’t work, could you be limp wristing?

Bottom line, if you cannot find a resolution it is not the great inconvenience you think it is. If you’re at the range - so what? If you’re in competition it can be a pain, but if you’re counting your rounds you should be anticipating a change and make this all happen very quickly. If you’re in a firefight you really don’t want your slide locking open on empty, you want to do a tactical reload where you swap your partial mag with a fully loaded mag.

While you’re getting used to all of this practice manually slingshotting your slide rather than using the slide release to drop the slide. It’s a simple thing to do when reloading and eliminates one more mechanical failure point.

Btw, I’m the better looking, smarter guy that @BassCliff mentioned previously. 🤔😜🤪😎

With all of my mags.

Check your grip. It may be too high and your thumb rides on top of the slide release/lock. Next time it happens don’t break your grip and check to see where your thumb is.
This happens to me all the time. Especially with Walther’s.

My first suspect is magazines. But, You didn't mention the age or mileage on the gun. With a lot of use, if you release the SLIDE CATCH with your thumb to close the slide it will over time wear the SLIDE CATCH surfaces. I have replaced a few slide carches that were just worn out. This is one of the reasons why I urge shooters to grab the slide and pull back and release to send the slide forward rather than using the slide catch lever to release it.
