Thinking About A Prodigy 5" Comp

Thinking about picking uo a 5" Prodigy Comp. I live in Connecticut which is a restricted state 10 round max capacity. Currently have 5 1911's and one "2011" Fusion XP Comp. Planning to use as a range toy. Love the Fusion Comp (shoots soft easy follow up shots). Have read way to many hate posts or pistol needs a lot of work to make it run. Ignition kit, trigger and so on. Wondering how the Prodigy would be out of the box? Any significant break in or long term issues. I shoot packaged 124 gr brass range ammo CCI, Republic, etc. in all my 9MMs. Currently breaking in an Emissary Black 9MM picked up last week. Typical new pistol stuff no real issues. Note the mags that came with the pistol arent great. Hoping they break in. Runs great with Mec Gar 10 round mags.

I haven't shot the comped versions so not sure how much of a difference they make but my OG 5" model is a great shooter. Cerakote is def a bit thick on the rails is probably my only real break-in gripe. It gets smoother and smoother each time I take it out for a session though. For QOL, Swap out the two piece guide rod system to a Dawson Precision One-Piece Tool-less guide rod. One piece rod and it captures the spring, so much better for maintenance. Duramags run pretty good in it (OEM mags).

I second this. I bought mine back when the Prodigy first hit the market and have over 4000 flawless rounds through it - all of it 124gr or 124 NATO. I did exactly what you mentioned, including racking it about a thousands times to wear down the cerakote. I have more than a few 2011s and my 5 in Prodigy is one of the slickest of the bunch. Just had a marvel cut done to it, just to see if it could get any slicker - which it did. Never had a problem with the mags. In fact, I run them in my 2K11 Pro.

I would love to hear how you think the 2k11 stacks up against the prodigy!

Did you decide to do it? I would like to know how the prodigy stacks up against the xp comp. Been thinking about getting either the prodigy, xp comp, 2k11 comp or the sig p211.

The 2K11 is a much better made gun and is infinitely better looking, but for $1000 more than a Prodigy I would expect that. The 2K11 feels much more solid when shooting it.

I have 2K11s and a P211 and they are very close. The Prodigy doesn’t hold a candle to them. The comp on the P211 is a bit better than the chunk port of the 2K11 Comp and shoots a little flatter. However, the comp on the P211 is a giant PITA. The guide rod and recoil spring are also a pain to put back when you field strip and clean the gun. And the P211 is a series 80 and you can feel it. It’s easy enough to do a Series 80 delete and not expensive and leaves you with a trigger in the neighborhood of 2lbs. Overall, I think the 2K11 Comp gets the edge because it is a traditional 2011 and is much better looking than the P211. Will you see any quantifiable difference in performance? No.

IMO, the real hero of the 2K11 series is the 4.25 in 2K11 Pro, specifically the uncomped Pro. It is as accurate as the 5in gun, but the slide reciprocates noticeably faster and the weight and balance is much better. There is not any appreciable difference in the comped and non-comped version.

After checking it out Opted not to get it. After quite a bit of research figure I'd have to put $500 into it to get it where I wanted. Didn't care for the quality fit & finish. Slide was loose, sloppy cerakote. Opted for a non comp'd Kimber 2K11. Was about $300 more at $1,700 and has a thinner aluminum grip. Love the Kimber haven't looked back. Still enjoying the Fusion no plans for more or replacment. 2K11 is pretty soft and flat for a 9MM. Not even close to the Fusion. Haven't shot anything that is.

Agree with your thoughts. Looked at a P211 GTO prior to the Fusion XP Comp. Didn't care for the series 80 or the comp. Strip & assembly on the Fusion are a breeze. Threaded allen head screws to R&R the chunk port comp. Was quite dissapointed when I took a close look at the Prodigy. Picked up a 2K11 non comp'd and love it.

Oh wow so you feel like the fusion is the best one out of those? If so that’s great to hear since it’s got the best price.

For me the Fusion was the right choice. Not sure if you step up to a Bul, Staccato or other higher end pistol how much better they would be. Comp’d or not those are pretty expensive. Head to head with Prodigy & Sig P211 Fusion wins by a lot. Just my experience.
