Trooper assaulted, patrol vehicle stolen (Washington state)

Someone - preferably law enforcement trained - explain this for all of us to understand…and take a moment to watch the video! All I can say is, wow!

From the article, “Shortly after a WSP vehicle approaches the scene, the man can be seen casually opening the driver’s side door of the cruiser. The trooper, a female lieutenant, appears to begin stepping out of the vehicle when the man suddenly grabs her, then toss her to the pavement like a sack of potatoes.”

Why in the *#&$ did she open her door and there are no other officers around!?

I’m am not trained as a police officer, but this just seems like the dumbest thing that one could do. She could have been killed.

PLEASE Discuss.

Don't modern police vehicles use keyless ignitions/push to start? I'm always harping on my wife to keep the key fob on her person, and not in her purse when she is driving. That way, if she is ever car jacked or somebody tries to steal the car while she is fueling up, the car will shut down once it goes a certain distance from the key fob. Maybe they don't use that option on police vehicles. I'm not a cop, so I don't know.

Guess it depends on the state/city. Also even if the fob is on their person, if the engine is running, the car will keep running even as the fob falls out of range. The most it might do when the fob is out of range and the engine is running is auto lock.

Regarding the fobs, noticed there's a new-ish method of car theft now days where the thieves would work in teams where someone holds up an antenna by the front door, that acts as an extender to the person by the car, to piggy back the key fob signal so they could unlock the car. Which tends to work because a lot of people leave their keys near the front door when they come home.

so couple of observations - 1. the officer should've kept her door locked/shut 2. Do not approach larger felon/suspect alone. The average man is larger/stronger than the average woman although this woman was not a tiny gal, she was not large either. 3. Know force disparity and plan for it. Most of us guys are over 200lbs and some of us are strong/muscular. 4. Don't attempt a takedown without help. He wasn't going anywhere all by himself - let him wander in the rain until help arrives.

Here is a little more video.

Ideally maybe she should have had a second Officer however as in the other thread nobody knows how to or they are afraid to go hamds on.

Obviously his actions are irrational dishing in and out if traffic so approaching the vehicle she could have waited OR went hands in or tased his dumb ***
Wasn’t like she rolled up in a normal pedestrian. They were called because he was doing dumb stuff in an instrestate!

Yes fellas, I still cannot get over this … this encounter!

I simply cannot find any reason whatsoever for the trooper to have acted in this manner … it just blows my mind.

So the “guy” was in a dangerous place (middle of the highway) and could have been hit and killed by a driver … is this therefore a matter of on-coming traffic interdiction? Was the trooper trying to keep him from being hit? Just making contact?

Are there ways to interrupt traffic in situations like this that don’t endanger the officer?

He could have had a weapon and in an instant you have a dead trooper.

But why not use your vehicle to interfere with him?

Why get out? Good lord this seems like a tactical disaster to me, but I am not law enforcement.

That's probably all the questions they're getting back at their post.

i school morning 1 of my kids went out to start the vehicle, we went to town (7 miles), dropped them off then i returned.........looked for the FOB and it wasn't to be found, texted and asked if they have it and the reply was yes..............so i can go at least 7 miles and it won't shut off.................so how far is the range before it will.................brand dependent i guess..........................good thing for having more than 1 vehicle!

And if it occured the other way , the peanut gallery would scream just as loud :

" Why did she hide in the car ? " , " Why was she a coward , instead of getting out , and taking action ? "
The officers I do know all say one has to go on the road, go on patrol to get promoted. So there is that issue.

I know some female officers and in my interactions they have been quite professional. Let’s be honest, it’s a male-dominated field.

But please help me to understand the how’s/why she acted the way she did in this contact.

What can we collectively learn from this?

The glaring issue is not that she had to get out of the car to confront the subject, it is where she chose to do and how.
She could have handled that so many ways to keep some good tactical distance to asses and control the situation properly.
That footage will be used at Academy classes forever. With good reason. She’s lucky she is not dead

Using a veh. like a cutting horse to corral this clown is a damn go way to cause an accident.

Waiting for back up sounds good unless dumb a** wanders in front of traffic and gets squashed like a bug. Then everyone and their brother is calling for her head because she didn't help this fine upstanding father of three that's turning his life around and was only have a metal breakdown. I'm sure her dept. would have backed her to the hilt:rolleyes:

It looks to me like he opened the door. The car didn't roll so I'm assuming it was in park. At that point she is a confined, dead-end space, Her options were limited to try and get some space or shoot the sob. Shooting worked well for Officer Darren Wilson didn't it?

As for DEI, well maybe, I've seen more than a few. Being the sexist I am I still maintain there is no place for female guards in a male facility (the reverse is equally or more so true). I've also known some ex-paratroopers, Marines, "scout snipers" that when the poo hit the fan, they were so go at being back up they would back up until there were outside the walls, and a few females that while maybe not much help at least they were there and at your back.

Probably the best option would have been pull up, roll down the window, and tase the clown and keep it up until he is quivering on the ground and peeing himself. I'll bet that would go over like a fart in church.

Maybe just me, but I'll not sit in the comfort of my home with all the time in the world to contemplate my navel, and Monday Morning quarterback her action. I'm sure she already has enough pencil pushing so&so's in her own dept. chomping at the bit to do that. How did this happen? POO HAPPENS! And all the "after action", " Maoist public "self-examination", and "training" in the world, ain't going to change that one simple fact.

I just researched all 3 of my vehicles. If the vehicle is running, and the key fob moves too far a distance from the vehicle, alarms will start, but the vehicle remains running. But once the vehicle is shut down, it will not restart without the key fob being in range. I still hate the idea of not having a key fob in my pocket when I'm driving. And I'm not going to tell the wife to leave the keys in her purse! lol Why make things easy for a thief?
