Note that today the US has less than 1/2 the inpatient psych beds we had in 1950 while the population has more than doubled. Physch patients today are treated with meds which help control problems. The issue is a large percentage get on the meds, go back on the street, think “I don’t need this crap” and stop taking meds. These folks then wind up sleeping on the streets and getting themselves in trouble. Eventually they are picked up and the cycle repeats. Go to your local area where the homeless live- a big percentage of these folks are in that cycle. These folks need to be institutionalized for their own safety and the safety of others.
Working in law enforcement, post release from prison, and prior to that as a social worker helping people get assistance, and having over 15 years cumulative experience, this is 100% spot on.
This is EXACTLY what is happening

As long as you’re ok paying for all these people with your taxes, because it isn’t going to get paid for with tariffs. And of course, states will need to be willing to put the funds and resources back into all these institutions that they shut down in the first place, or put on shoestring budgets, so they can hire competent people to run these places.
Well... I'd rather have my tax dollars going to pay for this than to somalian day cares...
Just sayin...

I’m not complaining if Trump wants to do as he says. It’s badly needed, but so many mental health institutions have been closed over the past 10-20 years I wonder what the logistics are of basically re-growing/restarting that industry.
we have many abandoned office buildings and hospitals...spread all across America.....they are for the most part built to last a long time...conversions to either private rooms, or a large room or 2, where several can have beds are possible....

most office buildings have a cafeteria, as do all hospitals.

rooms that need bars on the windows, nearly all rooms in fact, can be added........elevators can have electrical locks as well.

doors can have electrical locks too.

it can be done, not on the cheap, but in "some cases", cheaper than putting up a new building.
