When I'm going to the range with someone who hasn't shot a pistol very often I will take a 5" 1911, Compact, Sub C, and a Micro C. They are all 9mm. Go over the safety and operation then start blasting. Every person so far has found that shooting can be fun. The Compact size seems to win out on selection when we are done. The lack of exposure to firearms in general is a major problem. Hunting is declining (expense generally) and families no longer participate in shooting activities. I started (shooting) with my children when they were around 10-11 but always took them to the deer lease and the blind. When they were old enough to get a license they qualified and have continued down the road. Ask someone you know (open minded) who is not necessarily Pro Gun or an inexperienced co-worker to a range trip. Make the day fun and educational and maybe add a person to the group. Like many here I was exposed to guns at an early age and still cherish the days hunting with my Dad. We have the power to reduce the uninformed walking into a Gun Store, IMO.

The lead in to your article described a local gun shop here to a T. His used gun prices were higher than new. He never was ready with a price on the stuff he had. He had to have one of his lackeys check the internet to give you a price. On top of that he had two sofas in the store with 3-4 cronies sitting there BS'ing all day. He's out of business now.
 
IMHO, there are a lot more than 2 issues; those are basic starters. Then we get into revolver or semiauto. Then we talk hammer-fired or striker-fired. Then we discuss how difficult it to load the mags in the semiauto. And how many rounds is enough?

I have a Springfield Hellcat that I think is an incredible pistol for a fair price; but you can't load a 12-round mag without a LULA. And racking the slide requires muscles. A newbie -- man or woman -- could be put off by those idiosyncrasies. But to shoot it? Everyone loves it.

For an easy loading & racking pistol it's hard to beat a S&W EZ M&P2.0 9mm. I have a performance Center version and it's sweet. Of course fewer rounds in a mag (8) than the Hellcat

Though the quality of mine is average, my Charter Arms Pitbull in 9mm is a great starter self-defense gun, every while holding only 5 rounds. It shoots a god bullet and doesn't need moon clips.

Sadly, there is a series of pistols (the name of which rhymes with Easy) that are marketed for the newbie or those with weak hand strength, which have a feature that will frustrate the heck out of any shooter, new or old. Yes, I'm talking about the totally unnecessary grip safety. What sounds like a great idea, will turn that weapon into something less effective than a brick in the hands of a stressed shooter who doesn't train every week. The grip safety DOES NOT work nearly as well as a 1911. I have been with two relatively inexperienced shooters at the range with these damn things. Both really struggled with getting them to consistently work as intended. In the real world, having a grip safety on a hand gun marketed for the inexperienced may very well frustrate the new owner to the point where they don't want to shoot it, or any other pistol.
At the gun counter recently, I watched a middle aged woman being sold one, a .380 version. Yup, "this model is specifically made for the new shooter". I wanted to intercede, but didn't want to be one of those "know it all guys" and get in an argument with the behind the counter "gun expert".
It was to be her first pistol. I doubt she's had much success with it.
