What to choose for a Wild Boar hunt

Im planning a driven Boar hunt. We will be driving the boar, no hunters in stands. In the past Ive typically used a Double Rifle in various cartridges (9.3x74R, 45-70, and a 10 bore Paradox). For this one Im tempted to use a T/C Encore in 500S&W with a 16 inch barrel or possibly my soon to arrive Panzer Arms AUG 12ga.

I know Im all over the place with guns. This kind of hunting is usually fast, with shots under 20 meters. Rapid shots arent usually needed or possible, so a single shot could work but the AUG is still calling me just for being so far out of my norm.

Ill be carrying a handgun just for fun. Im toying with bringing a Howdah pistol (picture a big bore SXS).

This is a short half day hunt and doesnt involve humping up and down hills; but it does mean pushing through sometimes heavy brush.

If you want a challenge just use a knife.;)

I've been killing them with a 5.56 for nearly 50 years with 0 (zero) issues. 338lm will be my next weapon of choice.........1 shot 10 kills is my goal. The only loaded ammo i currently have for it is imi's 250smk's. Bullets i have for reloading in that caliber are, 230edl-x, 250fmj, 265ablr, 270edl-x, 285tac, 285edl-m, 300fmj, 300cc, 300edl-m, 300smk and maybe 1 or 2 others.

You are way over thinking this.

Hogs are not armor plated. I've used 9mm before. Typically, I use a 44 Magnum revolver. 357 with hard cast SWCs works well too.
223 works very well.

No they are not, but shot placement is key. A big sow or boar can take a lot of hits depending on caliber - placement and do damage to you in close before they die out.
Witnessed a boar take 4 rds of 9mm to the forehead and tusk the tree my buddy stepped behind before it went down.

Anything works, but in close thick brush, stopping power on the spot is key if you are toe to Toe so to speak.

I prefer a shotgun with slugs up close brush or thicket.
Easy to maneuver and packs a whollop with that amount of lead

I’ve seen every case scenario and combo over hundreds of hunts with all types of clients and friends.
Don’t ever underestimate a boar hog. Ever.

My 16" barrel AR 10 308 works on Arkansas razorbacks, simple, inexpensive compared to exotic calibers, 12 ga. slugs in the AR 12 or BP12 also work well. ;)
thats what i use
mainly because i had a nice 308 bolt action and loved it
then i saw an AR 10 308 and it was all she wrote
BUT we shoot from an elevated perch on a old flat bed truck, them big ones are pretty torquing and dont stop real fast
standing still is easy, but once they get to moving its game on.
only time i get close enough for pistol is after they fall and look DEAD :ROFLMAO: i am no FLASH and therefore choose not to have to run away like a monty python movie

This is two sows at 20 yards.
The boar at back left charged me when I dropped the sows.
No fun…

This a pissed off boar close in enough to hear their breathing in thick brush.

Again.. no fun

Moral of the story… if you intend to get in close, real close, then bring enough gun.
You’re not out running them, and your not going to be happy when they charge close in

When perforating porkers, my shot of choice is to draw an imaginary line between the ear and shoulder, then attempt to place a bullet about two inches below the ear along that line. Pretty much anywhere in the near proximity will result in a severing of the spinal column and the porker will drop.

From time to time you’ll have to administer a coup de grace, because pigs are always moving. I am almost always 1-2” off from my intended POI due them moving.

300edl-m should be 300 ablr

although a 5.56 doesn't have much recoil or muzzle jump i still use brakes as it can keep double taps and more with no muzzle movement. on my 6.5prc AR (22") with the brake on i can see/spot hits @ 25-30 yards. the again i wasn't under pressure from a charging po'd animal. the big reason i use fmj's around my place in handguns are for assurance of penetration on animals. i posted quite some time back where i shot a hog with a g22 (40s/w) and only had hp's............it took nearly a mag to kill it.

Most of the responses are in the context of hunting them American Style . The OP is doing Euro Style Driven . Moving fast , in his general direction , within 22 yards .

Since you didn't express a burning desire to use a Single Shot Pistol , on purpose , to make a point , we'll skip over it for now .

Of your listed options , the 12ga , specifically with Brenneke Slugs .

This. If you’re shooting from a tree stand or across a field that’s one thing. Up close you’d best be totin something with some serious power. A hog WILL mess you up if he’s not dropped “right now”. Tucker’s are no joke. A 45/70 Guidegun worked well for me, as does a .44 Mag pistol. There’s no way I’d ever use anything less powerful if I was on the ground and shots were under 40 yards. I’ve got a buddy who shoots ‘en at night with an AR in 5.56 with a very $$ night vision scope, BUT he’s in a truck bed up off the ground AND making shots at 200 yards +.

Yep. Ive done this style before. Id much rather be in a blind over bait; but this is a fun way too. In the past ive done "spot and stalk" with a single shot T/C Contender in 44Mag. I love Double Rifles and they are traditional for European Boar hunts with light to heavy cartridges 9.3x74R is a great round for big tuskers. Ive also seen guys using .243s and plenty of 223s/300 BlackOuts from AR type rifles.

Im toying with using the AUG 12ga just because its a new fun gun purchase. My fall back is a Double Rifle in 45-70 or an Encore in 500 S&W or a custom rifle in 762x54R that I had built for a Wolf hunt that never materialized. The truth is Ive got plenty of options and this is part of the fun. The AUG 12 is so far out of the norm for me, that it just might be fun

I really appreciate the suggestions, this is fun
