Your Firearm As Your Last Resort

I admire Greg Ellifritz's research on caliber and self defense. His results and the conclusions of the NATO and US Army "Handbook on Human Vulnerability" have had an enormous impact on my training vs caliber balance where my CCW rotation now varies from a P17 to P365XL to Hellcat RDP to a XDM Elite Compact 10mm.

According to everything I've heard from all the experts, Andrew Branca, Masaad Ayoob, Claude Werner, Tom Givens and others a self-defense case is probably going to bankrupt you if you don't end up in jail.

Yeah well, I sure don't believe everything the "Experts" say. Most of those guys are either lawyers or they hang out with lawyers or they represent CCW insurance companies. And much of what they say is either provably false or totally dependent on what state or city you're in when it happens.

That said, I totally agree with @HansGruber and @OkiePewPew. Even though I have much less to fear from legal repercussions in the event I am forced to use a gun to save my life or someone else's than someone in NY or California who doesn't already have a lawyer on retainer and live in a very pro 2A county and state, it is absolutely the last resort. There's a big difference from when we were young, out and about, standing our ground against all comers, never giving an inch, blah, blah, blah and you know, being an adult and trying to avoid that kind of crap. Interpersonal relationships aside, I will absolutely exhaust every avenue to remove myself from a contentious situation whether I am armed or not if I even get a whiff of potential violence on the horizon.

A year or so ago, I was in the produce section at the local Safeway. An employee ran towards the back of the store and shouted "They have a gun!" I ditched my cart and went to the back of the store while trying to see what was going on in the front. As the commotion worked its way towards the back, I ducked into the milk cooler and hid behind a pallet load of boxes. My phone didn't have any coverage so I couldn't call out to anyone to figure out what the hell was going on. Near about the time I was frozen, the assistant store manager came into the cooler. I peeked around the load of boxes and stood up when I realized who had come in. I asked him what happened and whether or not it was safe to keep shopping. He knows I carry and asked me why I hid. I explained I carry to protect MYSELF and nobody else. I told him I'll resort to using my firearm only if I see no other way out of a situation, even if it means hiding in a cooler. (Too old to fight and too fat to run!) It turned out a cashier refused to sell beer to a punk without ID so the punk came back with a gun to take the beer. Thankfully nobody got hurt. Unfortunately the punk escaped before the police arrived.
