ding dong ditch claims life

Its sad and stupid. The homeowner will probably be charged.
But, If someone rings or knocks on my door after about 9:00pm, you better believe that when I answer that there will be a gun in my hand. These days you just never know.
That is what a “Ring” doorbell is for.
Look at the camera and tell them go away if you dont know who they are. No sense this day and age to even open the door to give them a chance to push it open if ill intentions.

My house has a carport. I normally enter and exit through the carport door on the side of the house. Everybody who knows me, knows this and they all do the same. So when somebody knocks on the front door, I immediately know its a stranger. That makes me suspicious right from the start. From the front room window I can see who's at the front door.
I often go out the carport door and walk to the edge of the house to see who's knocking. I flank them that way. I've taken many strangers/ salesmen/ solicitors completely by surprise. Kinda funny watching them jump. 😁

either no parental guidance, lack of 1 parent, parent or guardian stoned and passed out, or drunk.

it starts in their home, as to why they are out past 7 PM.

should be "curfews" all across the country

out after that time?

cops nab'em, and call parent(s) to come pick them up and fine the parents $500 for each time.

i'm sick and tired of the lack of discipline all across the board on kids
A bit extreme there.
There are legal and innocent reasons for kids to be out after 7pm. Guess your kids didnt have 8pm sports games ? Going to the movies , or just hanging out. There are always good kids in society. Not all kids are hooligans.

We are not "gazillionaires". Middle class. And, not everybody can afford a house with a 2nd floor front porch. Nor do they have a first floor tenant. My point, is that there are alternatives to going to the extremes that these people do. Peep holes are as cheap as $7. We got a DIY system because that is what we can afford. I add to it as I can afford to do so. We have a budget, just like everybody else. I most certainly cannot justify the expense of some of the firearms that some of you seem to be able to afford. No way I can justify anything over $900. If that is a "gazillionare", I would hate to be a "bagazillionare".
I think it’s bajilion 😂

But seriously, you can get a wireless doorbell camera for $100 these days which for added peace of mind doesn’t seem an obscene barrier to entry (price I mean).

When I was a kid I lived in a small town (11k). The town had an 11 pm curfew for everyone under 18. You’re 17vand driving around? Nope -stopped and detained for folks to come pick you up. When I was 16 my best friend and I worked at a drive in theater and didn’t get off work until well after curfew. No problem, cops knew who we were and what we were doing. Saturday night we worked until close, cleaned the ramps and changed the marquee. By then it’s 2-2:30. We had to be at the newspaper office at 4 am for our second job, so we’d go out to Shelly’s Truck stop (ONLY place open)and eat breakfast WITH the cops😊.

no, its "gazillionaire"....they got more money than an ordinary bajilionaire.....

$100 can be too much for some people to spend.

you gotta think the neighborhoods and where this crap is happening.

low income, means little to no extra monies.

quick way for them to die...no one is going to know for sure if its an air soft or real gun.

me personally..??

i ain't asking questions first......
This. You kick in the door you’re going to be on the wrong end of a firearm. You carrying a weapon (or what APPEARS to be a weapon) you will be shot as I have no intention of allowing myself or my wife to be victimized by some jerk. Stupid on your part is not an excuse.

Ah, agree to disagree, we had the bang in the door and run about a year ago, and where I live it’s not a low income neighborhood by far, this kind of crap happens to any neighborhood period, not just by income levels

true that..however, "some here" seem to think that everyone can afford security protocols like cameras, ring door bells, and peep holes.

1st, many homeowners that rent out apartments do not want thier doors modified for peep holes, where some do.

my house as an example, someone has to get past the locked doors to enter....meaning it is not like an apartment building where the halls have multiple apartments, on each floor..here...1 apartment per floor, so only 3 apartments in total.

2nd, ring doorbells cost money as well, and the typical person on a fixed income, and that can be on Social Security, or a pension, or trust fund, is limited each month on money available.

rent, food, heating bills, electric bills, gasoline for the car (if they have one) take a chunk out of that monthly income.

so no "extra money" for such a ring door bell.

same is true for security cameras.......

true, crime is every where..however some here must realize not all can afford the added expenses

but the "low income" neighborhoods get hit more so than the "upper class" ones do.

reason being, no one can afford security protocols, or at least, "most cannot"

and a resounding NO, a landlord (me) or a home owner (me again) are NOT required by law (here) to provide anymore security than a lock on the doors.

Just a word about the environment in Houston. I don't know about the particular neighborhood, but Houston has long been known as a cesspool by other Texans, and this was before all the summers of love. Houston ISD was taken over by the state a few years ago because it was such a basket case. And despite the "Texas is a red state" propaganda, the next place Trump should send in the National Guard is Houston. Abbott sometimes overlooks his own agencies' neglect such as the winter storm power outages from a few years ago, or the recent floods which can be traced back to a county judge who didn't want to pay for a warning system, and to the festering sore of the dem stronghold of Houston. Not directly Abbott's doing, but he sure as heck was/will be blamed for it. Anyway, I wouldn't live in Houston on a bet. JMO

I have the same strategy at my house. Strangers use the front door while people i know use the back door or garage. I “meet” strangers at the side of the house with a friendly, “can i help you?”

Exactly this about Houston. I surely hope I never have to go through Houston for anything ever again, for as long as I live! I used to have to drive through it all the time years ago for work. I made sure I was always fueled up long before going through that Hell hole so I wouldn't have to stop for anything!

I get that but there was enough extra monies to have multiple guns and bullets (report stated multiples), so they are prioritizing safety it would seem, and by extension one would think they would include a camera in that budget. Knowing what is outside can be critical info in defensive situations.

I was pretty sure that that part of Houston wasn't the most glamorous part of the city.

I'm sure the old man was fed up and pissed off, so I get that part. I wonder how many times the kids had knocked on the door that night.....

Self control can be an expensive thing to lose.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned four legged security. Mine is on duty 24/7, about 45 lbs, barks at any strange noise and is tougher than she looks. ;)
Dogs are a great layer of security. We've always had German Shepherds, usually more than one. We don't have a doorbell, and we know when someone is getting close to the gate.

But some people don't like dogs.

And I'm not sure the guy who shot the kid should be allowed to have a dog to abuse.

But then, I like dogs more than i do many people.

good point. A colleague of mine had no legged security. That's right, a python at home. Now wouldn't that be quite the surprise for a gang of home invaders. They would likely make an Olympic sprinter look slow as they beat a hasty retreat.

I would almost feel sorry for anyone breaking into my place and/or attacking my wife and me. Two German Shepards that I truly believe would kill who or whatever would try to bring harm to the wife or me.

Counting a litter of puppies, we've had about 20 GSDs

Some I'd trust not to bite and others I'd trust TO bite.

The girl we have now sounds scary, but the only thing she'd bite are squirrels, rabbits, and chickens.

If a burglar broke into our house, he'd leave because our dog would lick him to death.

But we'd sure know someone was coming.
