AR safety detent issue

So, changed out the pistol grip and managed to lose the detent, going into outer space with the ISS and all the lost socks from the dryer... ordered a new detent and went to put it in, but about half of it hangs out the hole?? I watched a couple of videos for installation and it seems to just drop all the way in followed by the spring. Looking in the hole, there a flat looking piece of metal that keeps it from going all the way in. What am I doing wrong here?

Turn the safety as it moves it pushes against the safety detent. That ends up pushing into the spring in the pistol grip which gives it the click-eness you feel as you move from safe to Semi auto and or beyond. Also make sure the safety lever is properly centered in the receiver.

Make sure the original detent is not actually in the hole as well, I know you said it went flying but are you super really sure? Sometimes the detent is black not bright brass colored and is deep in the hole. Take the new one out and shine a flashlight in the hole. Just trying to help you cover all of your bases.

Thanks! I checked for all that early on. I can see into the hole, but its a silver grey piece of metal keeping the detent from going all the way in. The selector is on "Fire", currently and is completely inserted in its position.

Can you remove the silver grey piece out of the lower? Take a picture of it, but nothing should be in the selector safety hole. The detent rubs against the actual safety so nothing else should be in there.

Interesting then.. Im at work rn so cant do the pic. Ill check it again. THANK YOU!

Are you sure you lost the detent and not just the spring. The detent can still be in there, so use a this stiff wire and push up wgile making sure the selector is in the sage position. keep pressure on it, but not an excessive amount then move it to fire (making sure you have none in the chamber and mag is out.........bcg could be open while doing so). if the selector doesn't click so to speak when changing from safe to fire then the detent isn't in there. the safety detent spring is the same as the ejector spring iirc. the safety detent has a flat bottom unlike the pivot/takedown detents which are universal in direction.
