1A1 Ammunition Problem

Was presented a Springfield M1A1 in 2012 but never fired it until 2018. I was using 7.62 mm ammo and when I fired it
the bottom of the bottom of the magazines blew out. Unfortunately I felt it was a magazine problem so I fires a few more round. Again the bottom of the magazines blew our and the stock cracked. I sent it off to Springfield and they replaced the stock and said it was the ammo I was firing. Fast for to 3 weeks ago and I fired in again and the bottom of the magazines blew out. I quit firing the first time it happened. I took took in to a gunsmith who said it was the ammo. He told me to check the rifle and it should have the ammo type on the receiver. When I field stripped the rile I found "308" stamped on it. I have purchased 308 ammo and hope this will fire w/o a problem. I will update after my test fire.

Unless you are shooting reloads, and it is factory ammo. it is NOT an ammo problem. 7.62 is fine to shoot in a 308. but not the other way around. is this the same mag that keeps falling apart? if so throw it in the trash.

I had a similar mag blowout with Aquila ammo (made in Mexico) in an FAL awhile back.

I won't touch that brand anymore.

Also there are a few different 7.62 ammo. make sure you have 7.62x51

I've fired .308 and milspec NATO 7.62x51 from different sources in my L1A1 and never had a problem.

I thought .308 and 7.62 were okay to shoot out of modern barrels stamped 7.62 or .308, but 7.62 out of an older .308 stamped barrel was a no-no due to the higher pressure.

Wait a minute; You had a blow out, fired it again and had another with stock damage that SA fixed for you saying AMMO ProbleM, Then you went right back and fired more of it with the same result.

Why in the world would you keep shooting that particular ammo? Kinda like burning your self than touching the stove again to see if it's still hot.

Several videos on YouTube on this exact problem (although with other rifles in addition to an M1A). ZSR 7.62 x 51 had a serious issue with significant powder-measure variations from one cartridge to the next, maybe 2-3 years ago? several rifles caught live blowing out the magazine, stock damage, etc. I returned an unopened case of ZSR to the e-tailer from whom I purchased the case, referencing the specific videos showing this ammo causing major issues. They credited me and paid for return shipping.

Correct good sir…. The .308 has a higher chamber pressure than the 7.62 NATO.

That is true for .223 vs 5.56 NATO. 5.56 NATO is higher pressure than .223, whereas .308 is higher pressure than 7.62 NATO.
